Default Why does the enemy open their own gates

As a new player to SS 6.4, I've never seen this before, but when assaulting a town/castle walls, the defenders are opening their own gates to rush out and attack the men wielding the batering rams.

My men simply drop the ram, attack the enemy and force their way inside the town through the already opened gates.

Is this deliberate as I can't see the logic in the AI doing this?

(Playings as France on VH/M if that makes any difference.)

That is actually a quite common way or response to deal with a battering ram. Normally defenders would sally from other gates but sadly sally doors etc are not available. What was the force distribution between defender and attacker? Was your attacking army vastly superior?

Well, it has happened in every battle where I assaulted the town, and the force distribution has varied from me having overwhelming numbers, to being slightly outnumbered by the enemy.
I would understand if the sallying troops destroyed the ram, but they just rush out to attack, and when I move my troops back they also retreat, leaving the gates open behind them.

I would expect those gates to close on the retreat. Strange. Are you using the latest battleai?

They're welcoming your troops as liberators.

Every time that happened, my entering troops got a pot of boiling oil om their heads. If you smash the gate, you can avoid boiling oil, if they rush out... enjoy it. All they lose is a rather crappy unit for a chance to "wash" your every troop.

You can't avoid the oil by smashing the gate.

From my game experience I'm pretty sure you can... gonna test it sometime.

This is also happens to me, Savage AI, Genoa on VH/VH.
Mostly when I am outnumbered, or no reinforcements are nearby, ramming from (3)three different gates.

Actually when it happens to me a glitch occurs - the door stays open, but when you mouse over it says it's shut, and my men can't get in. It get's annoying that everytime I have my men grab the ram, they get attacked, but when they drop the ram to run in, or they hold onto the ram and try and hit the gate, the gate 'closes' and I can't get in.

That's why I just spam ladders.

You can't use ladders against wooden walls though. I haven't tried this on stone-walled towns/castles yet, so don't know if the oil would still get my men or not.

(The only mods I'm using are Savage AI and WatchTowers)

No, but you CAN use rams against wooden walls that ladders don't work against, hence rendering the enemy ineffectual against you.

This happens quite often... usually i am "outnumbered" and "far away" from the gate... i always thought the AI tries to kill the peasants pushing the ram and retreat in time before the high-trained-professional-units get to them...

As long as defenders are near the gate, the oil is active, regardless of whether the gate itself has been smashed.
