However much I adore the Scots, I must say i have become tire of the Alexander-like-phalanx pikemen parading around skewering everybody from 10 feet away. No such pike existed in Scotland during the medieval period, though pike much like the menulatoi (Byzantine) short pike men existed . For the next version of DLV, I would recommend modifying the byzantine pike textures and making some new ones to replace the Scots pike-men (all four units)

I think it is because of that awful 'Scoaattish' film made in Ireland by that Aussie turned American. Now some pikes I can understand, but not a whole army - fighting Snotland is like defeating endless waves of Saruman's Uruk-hai Pike troops. I agree with you Ulsterman, reduce the Phalanxes! However, I doubt if Repman will bother.

The Scots really need more variety to reflect their actual fighting style. They need a basic infantry unit other than Spear Militia and the TWO (2!) pike militia. They need a version of the Levy Spearmen, and a basic sword infantry to represent the Cottagers. And the Highland Rabble are useless; a javelin-toting version of the Ceitherne would be more accurate and useful. And yes, giving the Highland Pikemen the short pike might best portray their actual armament, especially when in schiltron formation.

Other than that, Scottish kings encouraged the immigration of foreign knights and the creation of their own noble heavy cavalry, so they should have units like Feudal Knights, but just very few of them. This thread has been around awhile, and gives a good breakdown of what medieval Scottish armies actually looked like.

actually, i made quite some mods in my installation. Because highland rabble appear with swords, i made them roughly equivalent in stats to sergeant swordsmen. I also made two extra unit spots by replacing galloglaich with galloglaich mercs and irish kerns with irish kerns mercs. The units are repeats, and that's the most basic way of free up unit slots (hmmmm just enough for northern and southern late bodyguard).
Thats not what i did though, I created a Noble Axe men, similar to noble swordsmen and Dismounted English Knights. I used the welsh axemen (ug1) model, so these axemen appear like English gentry swordsmen and a big two hander axe. They rock!! I gave them a screen name and entered them in export_descr_buildings only to discover that Noble Swordsmen aren't recruitable!!!!! This means they lack their late foot knight to compete with everyone else and so usually end up spawning huge armies of pikes and highland nobles
Well anyway I put up in, and i'm ready for an epic scottish campaign.

P.S also, on my installation, i made the geography appear less ugly. I put in loch ness, made the orkneys stick out more (and i added a fort there) made all islands higher up and fully passable, put Norwegian greenland on skye, and made it a castle and put a fort on mann and wick.
