    Default Crusade fleets

It is instant excommunication if you attack a crusade army, but if this army is aboard a fleet of ships, is it still instant excommunication for the faction who attacks?

e.g France puts a crusade army aboard some ships and sails them off to the Holy Land (for example). If Milan attacks this fleet will they be excommunicated?

This would be very helpful to know thankyou

    Yes.
That is because you are attacking a catholic faction, unless the pope has a REALLY good relationship with you, then you'd be safe.
But that's starting a war there.

Yes. When a crusading army boards a fleet, the fleet joins the crusade. Try it, the ship's unit cards will have the crosses on them.

you never know with the AI :p

to be absolutly safe you can unload your troops on a shore when you are almost out of movement points. crusader armies dont get a penalty for accesing a territory without military acces

if your fleet gets attacked and destroyed/routed, you can then easily rent a mercenary ship to continue

    Or Rebels/Pirates

Especially ones left over from previously conquered nations. They can be sizable at times.

Better yet build a couple of screening fleets. Keep them a little more than half of their move distance away from your crusader fleet, and don't move your crusader fleet until you have moved all your screening fleets. When you move your crusader fleet, keep it close enough to shore that you can land and disembark the army if your screens find an enemy fleet. I once lost 15 ships on the way from Scotland to Jerusalem, but my crusaders were safe the whole way.
"Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result. Eloquence may set fire to reason." -Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

Any army with a cross banner on top of it whether army on land or on ship will most likely not be attacked by the catholic faction AI, in misc cases they might be attacked when the number of crusading soldiers is less than the AI army but a higher probability is that when the AI has a great army it itself joins the crusade so cancelling out that probability as well.

In short you are safe but be vary of Muslim fleets they will show no mercy.
