Can anybody explain me how to make formations?

I would realy apreciate it, if somebody explain me how to make formations
I am making a sub-sub mod of 300WOS and I want to replace the spartan boar formation with a more historical accurate one, and I decided to make a theban formation...
I found one in darths AI mod, but I noticed that it does not look like a theban formation...
I tried to make one myself, but the formation did not work...
tried it again...
and again...
and again...
etc...

I would realy apreciate it, if somebody explain me how to do it step by step
