Gothic Spearmen Question

gothic spearmen can form phalanx or this can be deactivated.

even if it is deactivated it looks like a good formation, not like the basic spearmen in phalanx deactivated

so my question:

is ther an advantage when you deactivate the phalanx formation for gothic spearman?

eg to follow and charge cavalary maybe, or generally to attack??


edit? so no advantage when gothic spearmen dont use phalanx? same as basic spearmen..should just be used to move fast?

Sorry for late answer.

Phalanx attribute is smthg that has from each own bonuses and penalties.
When in phalanx, a unit has very good protection from the front, also missiles are less effective, and with DarthMod settings it is set to behave as realistically as possible.(Powerful from the front, weak at the flanks, rear)
Penalties are low speed when in phalanx and generally lower reaction to turn.
So a greek phalanx may hold 2 roman units from the front but when flanked even if they try to turn they will lose too many men in the process.

For gothic spearmen I propose the phalanx formation since they fought with cohesion and basically are able to hold the center this way as any phalanx.
Normal spearmen are more mobile, can be even more powerful against cavalry in close contact when coherent since they have better reaction, but do not have special attribute of phalanx.
Balance but nothing special.

but if i attack, say cavalry, with gothic spearmen that are not in a phalanx..will they still get spear bonus against cavalry or will that make them jsut too weak?

If unphalanxed the gothic spearmen loose their extra spear bonuses. They can manage it quite well but not as good as in phalanx.
They do not have sec weapon so they still use their spears.
