How to promote Literacy?
I was unsure whether to post this on the Political Forum (since it'll be mostly about policies) but opted for here because at the end of the day, it's about books.
My country, Thailand, has a very low books read per capita rate, for a country as developed as us. We have decent literacy rate, that is, most people can read and write. We're a not a poor under-developed country. You come to Thailand, and you see decent infrastructure, and if you go to Bangkok, you see a modernised city.
However, our books read per capita, per year, come to about 2-5 (depending on the sources.) That's ridiculously low IMHO. I don't know how high it should be, but when I see the statistics for neighboring countries, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore being 10 times higher, I feel a bit embarassed.
Reading can't just be a cultural thing. It partly is, but surely it can't explain the whole difference. Those of you living in countries that are full of avid readers, can you enlighten me as to why people in your country read so much? What kind of policies are implemented? Basically, how does a country promote it's population to read much much more?
Cheers!
"My brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the Arsenal is no more, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of gooner-ship, but it is not this day. An hour of Spuds and shattered cannons when the Highbury Emirates comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of North London!"
