I really couldn't care less, to me this is Obama's way of taking on a softball issue that is easy to win since he cant win on debt talks, in order to feign the appearance of progress.

There are major issues with the future of our country's economy and this is what gets done. surely more important things should be focused on IMO.

I suppose this is nothing new for our commander and chief, who spent a year on health care reform when people were begging for jobs, and re-signed the patriot act twice when he swore not to do so even once during his campaign, but really? Can't this wait until after our nation averts financial catastrophe?

But im already getting off topic in my own OP. Feel free to discuss the morality, timing, whatever you like.

The timing doesn't, and shouldn't, matter. Injustices like this one can be dealt with easily without distracting from major issues. Besides, it's probably better that this was done now so that the right won't immediately jump on it and rail against the measure. More than likely, it'll just be common fact by the time this crisis is over.

On the topic of gays in the military: who cares? Let them serve.

On the timing of the issue? Eh, its politics. This sort of thing goes on all the time. Its an issue that should be a non-issue, or what I like to call a decoy issue. Remember back in 2004 when a few dozen states had votes on gay marriage that just happened to coincide with Bush's reelection? I'm convinced he won that election based on many people turning up at the polls to deny homosexuals basic civil liberties. It was disgusting, yet masterful, politics on the part of the GOP.

The timing was already decided months ago when the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell passed Congress.

Let all those who wish to serve in the military do so with pride and honor. I'm glad that this issue on gays openly serving is finally being resolved.

However, the media spotlight is only drawing attention away from other, more pressing political affairs that Obama needs to contend with.

If a US soldier was captured by a terrorist organization, his/her sexuality wouldn't matter. He/she would end up being tourtured and killed anyway.
