    Default Centers of Trade

I was wondering if there are any benefits to destroying centers of trade. In my campaign as Spain, I have taken all the lands in the Americas from what used to be the Shawnee, Cherokee, Creek, Zapotec, Aztec, and Inca, as well as some colonies. I have one COT in North America, and one in South. I would prefer if all my American provinces used the one in North America as their COT, so that it's less scattered. Would destroying the Southern one be a bad idea?

Destroying a COT costs valuable prestige.

Destroying CoT's is often a good idea as it concentrates wealth in other CoTs. Keep in mind though that if there's too many provinces contributing to a CoT, the game can spontaneously create CoTs in other nations that use that CoT (something like 30-40 provinces).

Is this a bug or a feature? Sometimes you can't know with pdox

Ahh, I see now. Thanks. At any rate, that COT seems to have disappeared on its own...either that or I accidentally clicked the delete button. Now I have one COT with a quarter of the worlds gold and half the fur, half the sugar, and a host of other things. Yay.

Another question - exactly how does a COT add to your economy?

It gives a large boost to income. Start a new game as the Hansa, and compare your finances to those or another 3 province nation. They also provide a place where your merchants can easily out-compete other nations. That gives even more income.

It's a feature. In one of the recent beta patches they indicated that they changed the threshold (35 to 40 iirc), so that implies it is indeed a feature.

CoTs that arn't worth much or lack traders accumulate something called "Stagnation". Stagnant CoTs can sponteanously go out of business and disappear. The AI to my knowledge will never willingly destroy a CoT.

Depending upon the wealth of the CoT in question it adds tax bonuses to the province it's based in. Coastal CoTs also reward you with 0.1 colonists per year aswell as bonus merchants (can't remember how much). Other than that the only benefit is that you can say embargo people out of it.

In addition, of course, to the trade income you gain from trading in it. You'll rarely have less then 5 merchants in your CoT

Well, since Divine Wind changed how Mercantalism/Free Trade works actually building your own is almost irrelevant in that regard. Before it was simply get the Mercantlism bonus if you own it, Free Trade bonus if you don't. Now it's about the provinces trading there, not who owns the CoT.
