    Default Second Hard Drive Problems

I recently purchased Samsung Spinpoint 1 Tb Sata internal hard drive. I had just ran out of memory on my old hard drive and was going to add this one as my second hard drive thinking it would be easy to do. I was wrong. There isn't a second power supply cable for a second hard drive in my computer. There is a second power supply cable for a second disc drive though. Could I use that even though the cables look different?

I have a 500w power supply. Do I need to upgrade that?

I went to Best Buy and asked them about this, and they said that if your power supply doesn't have a extra spot for a hard drive then you could damage your hard drive by using a splitter like this. Is this true? I am running a quad core phenom cpu and a 4850 graphics card.

Best Buy will tell you whatever gets them the biggest sale. Most of their employees sound smart but are pretty much just idiots.

The adapter will work without any trouble.

I just received that power cable in the mail and realized it doesn't have the same color combination as the cable that is connected my old hard drive. The old hard drive has a yellow black red black orange combination while the new one has a yellow black red black combination. Is that orange cable important? If I use the cable I bought and connect it to a white connector that is near my disc drive will my hard drive run? Does it matter that one of my hard drives will use this orange cable while my second hard drive doesn't have one?

    I'm thoroughly confused

I doubt you'll ruin it with a good 500w psu. We used to do things like this with extra floppy drives and harddrives.

Best buy wants to sell you a PSU, those converters work perfect I've been using them for years!

If you're really that worried, you could use external storage, either through the USB or eSATA slots. In theory, an extra HDD won't effect your PC, in contrast if you upgrade your graphic card to one that draws more power.

you plug the molex into the molex female,

and just plug the sata power into the back of the drive its fine, not all manufacturers use the exact same dye colors it wont make any difference all this is standardized so it dosent really matter lol just plug it in and it will work.

So it doesn't matter that one has 5 wires while the other has 4?

No molex connector has 5 wires... whatever you have with 5 wires is not related with a molex power plug.

They are keyed. they only plug in one way. They are almost foolproof, no matter the color scheme.
