Internet, google, yahoo, hotmail, skype, hewlett packard (printers) most of the big ISPs, all have 'Memorandums of Understanding' with intelligence agencies of the US government. What happens is, the US government approaches these companies and says 'We don't really need a subpoena or warrant for a LOYAL US company like you? Do we? Surely not...sign here please.....' The only way to be 'off the grid' is really off the grid, like using an ISP and services in Russia or Iran. Use anything American, and they've got you.
