Editor's Note: The vast majority of this information can be found on Wikipedia, with convenient links. I'm simply rephrasing much of what can be found there under the relevant Pontus link.

So: A state of Persian origin founded by Mithridates I. The coastal region was pretty heavily Greek in culture; the inland was more Iranian/Persian, as it was settled by Cappadocians and Paphlagonians. The "Pontic culture" was a mixture of the two, probably similar to what Alexander intended for the whole of the empire.

Mithridates was a subject (as far as I can tell) of Antigonus I - until Antigonus tried to have him killed, at which point he fled and established himself at Cimiata. Around 281 BC, with Pontus established, he formed an alliance with Heraclea Pontica, a Bithynian town, to protect each other from Seleucos.

So, to answer your question: Yes. The Pontic people were both Persian and Greek, and a Persian satrapy had been established prior to the rise of the Pontic Kingdom. As time went by, they did become more Hellenized, though, and the coastal region was predominantly Greek anyway.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.
