Is it? I was most agrivated by Empire. It was a great period for a game, had some cool idea, but is full of problems and the gameplay mechanics were obviously not tested as they are highly impractical. For example I loved the new tech tree but you never get to make the best units because even if you persue the technology fervently the game is over before you can get them on the field.
I looked at the lead designer's webpage and he joked about how he wouldn't even give his free copies away to his friends the game sucked so bad. "Great," I thought. "Thanks for taking my $60 ####ing dollors though..."
And here I thought I was the only person who thought Empire Total War was a massive failure. I was seriously hoping that getting back to swords and melee would make the game playable again. I was wrong!
If only, if only they tried to make their games masterpeices. Masterpeices like Medieval II.

You should get the top modders to collaborate with you. I would buy this.
The problem here is the same problem with movies, music, etc. The industry gets started by people who love doing it and work there asses of to do as good a job as can be done--then it becomes a massive business and a bunch of soulless, stuffed-suit, subhuman, vermin accountants come along--take it over and utterly ruin it to squeeze a few more pennies out of it.
Not wanting to preach, but capitalism ruins everything in the end. When's the last time you looked out your window and saw three-square inches of space without an ad plastered over it. Neil Degrass Tyson, curator of the Hayden planetarium and my favorite science writer, mentions in his book, "Death by Black Hole," how an ad executive once called him to ask if there was a way to project his company's logo on the ####ing moon...
