You need to have pretty good reputation with the people/plebs/whatever you want to call them. So they'll back you when you take over Rome.
Just keep making conquests and such, the people will love you for it.
Edit: I also found you should make as specific general your "War General" as I found some traits come to family members as they conquer multiple settlements such as "local hero" and "National Hero" which gives you more reputation with the people.

When you have a lot of money and many regions, the Senate grows quite jealous of you, while on the other hand the people begin to like you. At some point the senate will order your faction leader to kill himself. If you refuse it triggers the civil war, and you can then attack the other families, and also siege Rome with no repercussions

thanks, looks like im nearly there, btw when the civil war begins, i assume i have to slaughter the other families to the last?

You dont have to turn down a suicide demand, when your popularity with the people is around 70% you can just attack one of the other factions. If possible make the civil war start on your terms.

Think twice before you start the civil war! the war for the italian peninsula is awesome!!! but to fight with the other roman families troughout the world just sucks man, and they got hundreds of armys. And the other families will stand in your way to conquer rome, once I've had a true bloodbath outfront of Rome which i won slightly ( was like 2 of my legions, against 3 of the enemies)
