    Default Your most frustrating CTD

Well just had the most badly timed 'unspecified error' since I have been playing the mod so had an idea for this thread. This isn't a thread for moaning about CTDs as they are well catalogued but somewhere to tell the tales about lost progress etc etc. Whether you raged afterwards or just smiled ruefully here is the place to explain why. If there is already something like this then I apologise I couldn't find it.

For me I had just started a new Kislev campaign and got to the point around turn 12 where two full stacks of Tzeentch siege your capital city Kislev. I had known this was coming so had about three quarters of a stack of spearmen and kossars in the city led by Kaspar. Outnumbered two to one by the chaos hordes Kaspar led an inspired defence of the city using stakes and walls of spearmen defending the city square to decimate the chaos armies, four times he charged into the line himself to prevent the spearmen being broken. Firstly to destroy a unit of ranged fire throwing daemons that were decimating my lines, second time to challenge a general to single combat whom he dispatched along with the chaos generals bodyguard, third and fourth time to tip the balance against units of chaos warriors. Finally with piles of marauders and warriors stacked around each entrance to the square Kaspar was able to mop up the hellcannon crews outside the city and claim a heroic victory in which the Kislevite force only lost 25% of its men compared to the chaos armies who escaped with the lives of about a dozen marauders in total. I was really happy with this win, not the greatest victory ever granted but it just felt so satisfying to hold the capital so emphatically. But lo and behold on the way back to the campaign map up pops the unspecified error message, in this case I wasn't too angry just incredibly demoralised.

After battles CTDs are, by far, the worse, and seems to occur when you have an especially epic battle. I have had my share. These CTDs really destroy your desire to continue playing. The worse are where you have to fight multiple stacks, one right after another. Those battles take a lot of time because you want to win but are also trying to nurse your units, so they don't get completely destroyed and then bam, ctd! However, since I have lowered some of my graphic settings, I have had no after battle CTD, so try to adjust your settings a bit. Siege battle also suck, simply because they take forever and get very laggy.

Agreed, after battle CTD's are the worst, tought I have had just one with 1.44. But that was after 3 epic battles at AI turn..

About siege battles download reduced city-textures from ziher (*click*), it makes sieges a LOT more smoother. It reduces textures of buildings from 2048x2048 to 512x512, huge improvement and still looks ok. Also once I get my re-texturing submod released, it will improve siege fps, I use half the size of vanilla textures 1024x1024.

It was a while back, a year of 2, when I played Warhammer back in one of the earlier versions, where crashes were regular after battles. I was playing the dwarfs where you had to hold off the chaos at your capital, I survived with 29 troops but crashed.. I never played dwarfs again. *DUM DUM DUM*

never had a crash on the battlemap, only once while a battle was loading. uncounted crashes all at exactly the same time during the ai's turn moves on the strat map i.e,as the heretic priests move.which is very frustrating when youve just won 6 battles in a row defending your karaks from the nightgoblin hordes and you have to fight them all over again, and you'd really like to stop and eat something! cheers

Usually after every epic battle. Which pissed me off, but I figure I never really finish a campaign, and that the computer knows this. So, it probably thought, "Hey, that battle was sooo sweet, why not play it again?" In which I say to myself, "Alright! But do I have time to get a sandwich?" And the computer replies, "No." And so I am forced to sit in front of my computer; like a zombie, and play the awesome battle again!

Every time I have a CTD after a big battle, I load the game and use cheats to win the automatic resolve. This is (apart from toggle_fow from time to time) the only situation when i am using cheats. Its just too frustrating to play a battle another time with the danger of another CTD....

    Always the same:

very big (2vs2, 1vs3, 2vs3), heroic battle --> the ai does very well, actually entertaining and hard-fought battle --> end battle, close and satisfying victory --> CTD --> leave CoW for a month
It's only after you have lost everything, that you are free to do anything.
