To make it shot: 3 US ships the guided missile destroyers USS Chung-Hoon and USS Preble, as well as the rescue and salvage ship USNS Safeguard come to Vietnam and like their sisters ships (USS Peleliu, USS Mustin, USNS Bruce Heezen…) they was welcome

The USS Constitution (The Old Ironside) the first USS and Vietnam

Just like 166 years before (unlike several decades ago) 3 US ships received the warm welcome of the local authorities. Here at Da Nang 166 years ago (1845), the very first of the United Stated of America's warship the USS Constitution (The Old Ironside), the first ship which bear the name USS came and rest here as well as to bury one of her sailor William Cook (who perished by disease). Although the tombs of the unlucky sailor was disappear (by the time) but we known that the American foreigners was hospitably allowed to buried their comrade at the Monkey Hill (Đồi Khỉ) not far from Da Nang! The tombs although belong to the stranger still received the careness of the local for nearly a hundred years before it disappear by the strength of nature.

According to Vietnam: "The visit of 3 US ships is a normal action and it didn't relate to the other things, 3 US ships come here is just a coincidence after a dozen of China's aggressiveness and there're no practice!"

That was indeed the mother of all stupid wars in the 20th century.

Maybe due to outcome, but people remain ignorant on the political realities of the region at the time. And apparently always will. The US had to act.

US-Vietnamese relations are at an all time high. Ho Chi Minh would be pleased.

Sad that it didn't happen in 1945...

Side note: Ho Chi Minh offered Danang to be used as a US Naval Base if the US recognized Vietnamese Independence.

To control SEA it is crucial to control Thailand and Indonesia; the rest are not very important overall (well may be Singapore needs to be controlled too).

If US can support Terrorism like (or event ally) Taliban, Bin Laden and dictator like Saddam and Mu-barrack regime then US can back Communist nation again Imperialism, Expansionism. It's simply a game to dominate the world.

The stupid thing about the Vietnam war is that Vietnam as a firecely independant country would have sought a balance between her Chinese neighbor to the north, Russian influence into communist affairs anyway and thus looked for US to provide some counter to get sucked up by the big red guys.
