IMO the defining feature of RTW is the campaign map. Every ggame can have custom battles and pretty units, but very few games have such an interactive campaign map. Many of them are only a map with specific battles labeled on them, not at all like RTW.

Yeah, RTW is all about the camp map. I can't go back to MTW anymore, because even though the battles are amazing, the camp map makes me want to jump out my 18th story window.

For me RTW defines strategy. It was probably my first strategy game because I was not too interested in the genre. There are so many great aspects of it, I'll just list my favorites:

    • The fact that diplomacy exists. (It may not be the epitome of it, but it still has a small impact)
    • The ability to play the game however you want. No required objectives, no limitations, etc.
    • The diverse environments that you can battle in.
    • The fact that you can create the most diverse armies.

IMO it is the combination of eye candy and game depth. You are to manage a great empire, plan your moves on the campaign map, fight out hard battles and sieges...thatīs the depth.

And additional, the units are good-looking, the cities are nice too, it is fun to watch the game and sometimes have a look at your growing cities... thatīs the eye candy.

i think its the combination of a fully interactive campaign map, and also the level of command and strategy involved in battles that i didnt feel as much of in MTW. The existence of some diplomacy is also cool too.

I'd say the innovations over previous Total War games. I've only ever played Medieval: Total War and Rome: Total War...and RTW is quite a bit different from MTW. Campaign map, settlement system, battles - and, er...Rome. You get to play as the Romans, and to slaughter the Carthaginians

The administration over an empire is the best part by far. And the epic battles (rather than the smaller ones that always keep happening...it's nice to have full stacks versus full stacks).

For me diplomacy makes R:TW, there's nothing better than ripping of rivals with useless map information or snubbing an annoying ally. Having said this I must say the amount of options as regards diplomacy in general is limited as was stated somewhere above. The battles are also a key part of R:TW as is the wonderful campaign map.
