Default Is there any way to set your units to autoattack the next nearest enemy unit after completing orders? Also why do cavalry sometimes stop chasing for no reason after engaging javelin/archer cavalry?

Doing the Teutonic campaigns right now and dealing with Novgorod/Lithuania is annoying as hell. Like 90% of their troops have ranged capabilities which isn't a big deal except my troop AI will be retarded and just sit there and endure waves of javelins.

Even if I tell my cavalry to chase them down they'll usually stop chasing after a while, usually after the enemy ranged cav enters the melee then runs away (though not running due to routing). It wouldn't be so bad except usually half of the lithuanian guys are ranged cav so battles will end up all across the map, making it a pain in the ass to micromanage. Many times while I'm in the midst of a pitched battle I'll find a general or heavy cav unit taking 50% casualties because they'd be standing there letting a jav unit harass them 30 meters away.

I wish there was a "Fire at will" command for melee so they'd auto pick targets.

This is a well known glitch. Get the latest patch.

Steam doesn't have Kingdoms patched to latest?

That would be more like "hack and slash at will."

If you have units grouped together and you select the entire group and then attack, it will auto target. But this doesn't work very well and it only even works if the enemy units are close.

Make sure your units aren't in Guard Mode.

I never had this glitch before until recently. I know that I in the game settings changed the unit size from "big" to "enormous", do you think that might have changed something? I have the gold edition, so as far as I understood, I actually have all recent patches.

And I've also noticed something similar but different: When I'm having a group of units and they during the lapse of battle get spread across the map, I simply select that group and order them to attack a certain enemy unit, however instead of attacking that unit, many just tend to charge into the nearest enemy unit...

I do select to attack that specific unit for a reason. For example, if i want my cavalry to charge against some archers, while most of them charge against the selected hostile unit, some of those being far away simply charge against an enemy unit which has followed then, which happens to be a bunch of spearmen... Then I often have to order each individual unit. And it's kinda hard for unit to exit a fight once they got in I've noticed as well.

I've had similar problems in vanilla. Sometimes it seems like cav will run to the location where the enemy was when you first right clicked on them and will then hesitate to actually follow the enemy as they run away. It generally works for me if I right click on the enemy again when my cav are close, just to "reinforce the point" for the AI I guess.

Horse archers are just a pain. I hate them so much because of this. I'll usually just charge all of my cavalry into their missile cavalry to take them out asap. Most missile cavalry sucks at melee so if you catch them you will kill them.
