Default Turkey charges Al Qaeda opperatives for failed anti-USA plot

    http://news.yahoo.com/turkey-charges...082705644.html
" A court has charged 14 suspected al-Qaida militants for allegedly planning to attack the U.S. Embassy in the Turkish capital.
The charges — which were filed by an Ankara court late Friday — come as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visits Turkey's cultural capital of Istanbul for a meeting on religious tolerance.
The 14 suspects were captured just before Clinton's arrival. A 15th suspect was released, though may later also face trial.
"We were very grateful that Turkish authorities broke up an al-Qaida plot that was aimed at American targets in Ankara just a few days ago," Clinton said in Istanbul on Saturday."

    OK Good for Turkey.
However: There's Al Qaeda in Turkey?!? I thought Al Qaeda's remnants were in Yemen and hiding in Pakistan, Afganistan and other troubled countries.

Such terrorist organizations are far reaching, and seeing them in countries that are 'relatively close' to their hideouts isn't that surprising.

However, the article said that they are 'suspected al-Qaida', nothing has been confirmed about their allegiance yet.

Yes, but Clinton is visiting us (Greece) next I don't want her dying in Greek soil. I doupt we're as good in handling Terrorists as Turkey seems to be.

I'm sure the US and Greek officials will collaborate to provide optimum safety measures for Clinton's arrival.

Turkey had it's own 9/11 in 2003 with bombings of HSBC HQ, British consulate and two synagogues. Dozens were arrested, some got life in prison, some got a few years.

You need to watch a certain Southpark episode to think that's funny, at least.

Lol the title sounds a bit misleading. For a second there I thought they are charging them for not being successful.

I vaguely remember something. Not 9/11 though, not even comparable. Was it Al Qaeda? And why did they attack in Turkish soil? Turkey doesn't support Israel etc.

I hope that the political right in this country takes this to heart. I'm sick and tired of pundits attacking Turkey for no good reason. Turkey has displayed on numerous occasions that while they may not be the most cooperative with our foreign policy (sometimes for good reason), they are most certainly not a nation that is unfriendly. Everyone should consider Turkey a much more the astute ally that they really are.

Hillary Clinton (a woman) visiting a (secular Muslim) country for a meeting on religious tolerance (which is a no-no) would make an excellent target. You can find individuals or cells sympathetic to, or part of, Al Qaida in many countries. Including Turkey. And besides, American embassies are high-risk targets more or less everywhere.

that, or its the Syrian regime trying to revenge the USA after it sided completely with the revolting Syrians. After all Alqaida has helped Syria many times both in Iraq and in Lebanon

There is no Al-Qaeda in Turkey. It is simple propaganda. It has been confirmed nations like to paint any terrorist organization as Al-Qaeda, so the U.S. provide funds to the nation. Al-Qaeda is an organization that is practically dead and is almost exclusively in the AfPak border. Other al-Qaeda named organizations simply adopted the name from the original organization but they have no connection to other al-Qaeda organizations. Many times, these organizations don't even refer to themselves as al-Qaeda. Just like the Libyan supposed al-Qaeda affiliates are nothing more than a terrorist organization that has existed for years. If you really think they called Osama bin Laden for orders then the propaganda machine has gotten to you. I have studied national security. I recommend Al-Qaeda: Casting a Shadow of Terror.

Just like the elephant animation, this Carthage scenario is actually in the game, it just has a small percantage factor for showing up, that's all...

That's why I was suprised to hear they were Al Qaeda. Because I though Al Qaeda has some remains in Afghanistan/Pakistan and strongholds in Yemen. And like you I find it hard to believe that every extremist muslim terrorist group has ties to Al Qaeda or links with them.

Sure, but you have to pay a few billions for Greece and Ireland. And brace yourselves because you may also have to pay more than a few billions for Italy.
