Default Reason why you can't select your heir.

I grew tired of this, the moderators might be even more - it is everywhere - "Why can't I set my heir????? Just like in RTW?????".

In RTW there was a feature which could be used to change your heir - it was pretty awesome need - to choose your next faction leader. But the heir who got their inheritance rights removed had a reduction in Influence. Anyway.

The reason in Medieval 2: Total War (and all mods) you can't choose your heir is....

That's because they don't get banned for ignoring them.

I actually wonder why can't they make every daughter a princess? Historically a king could surly ask one of his family member to marry to another general/foreign royals.

You still get to adopt a miraculously fictional created noble/general/exceptional commoner with those daughters.

I thought in Vanilla every princess appeared on the campaign map.

But what if on the faction leader's death, you get a one-time option to choose/change your heir? That'll lessen the "princesses all over the territory"

I do not think that the reason for not beeing able to coose your heir is "too many princesses"... This "Problem" is too easy to solve...
I bet it is much simpler: Right now the game chooses the heir by just checking who hast the most "Authority".
That“s easy (and fast) to code! The game just compares a few numbers...
Harder to code would be the ability for the player to choose!
So this way time and money was saved!
They could have modified and used the "Pope-Election-Screen" to choose your heir... I bet it was their intension... but like usual the release date "suprised" the programmers and they had to "cut" some "not-that-important" features to make it in time! Progs are like bananas! They mature on their way to the customer... That“s the main reason for patches (bugfixes)!
and theres no reason to spend money on a programmer to fix a problem that does not bring any profit!
If you do not believe me... check out how many Windows-Patches werent bugfixes...

...of course i could be wrong... this post sound like i am all-knowing... but sadly i am not!

there's also the non-gameplay, ie. historical, reason that most successions in the middle ages are based on laws, such as primogeniture or whatnot. "Choosing" an heir in the sense of it is just not practiced, especially if that heir is an "adopted general". This is mainly a problem of game mechanics, which chooses not to model the complexity of feudalism (heck, standing armies? france with territories completely loyal to the king?) due to the choice of CA of gameplay over historical accuracy (there are other games for that).

well the more irritating thing is that some generals are able to be the heair apparent who are not the king's son. actually i have had more often then not an heir who was not of direct descent from the king. If the king is childless, the man becomes heair presumptive, but if he has sons, that heir presumptive does not lose his chance he becomes heir apparent even though their are perfectly good princes available to be heir....its very odd and i think its bug related to be honest. It may be an SS thing rather than a CA thing though.
