another hint: close to the end of war.. this battle is part of a more famous series of actions, which took place around a famous river.... The map above shows the disposition of troops at the eve of this very battle.

That's not the Peruvian flag (although it looks very similar to it), but that doesn't mean the Peruvians weren't involved... The injured admiral won the battle and even survived to see the end of the war. His predecessor was less lucky though, having committed suicide following the news about a naval setback at the hands of Peru's allies.

The ship was a particularly powerful vessel, also holding a global record in terms of navigation, not military prowess, however.

The Battle of Callao?

Callao is correct! It's the Spanish flag, although the lines look more vertical than horizontal to me. The Spanish admiral was injured, but the operation was a success, although the war between Chile, Peru and Spain ended in a stalemate. The vessel is the frigate Numancia, the first ironclad ship to circumnavigate the world.

This battle is also intresting in that although inconclusive, the Spanish pretty much packed up and left South America.

ok so that pics says WWI; the term you cited was created during the Crimean wars of mid 1800's (by Russians referring to British troops), but ofc this one cannot be the Sevastopol siege. If I have to think to WWI, there are various battles during which the British soldiers have been led to massacre because of bad (mostly badly informed and trained, to be honest) officers.
