Close. The city where this photo is from was the capital of the kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783, if that helps.

Judging from your hint irontaino should be right. During the time-span you name Bratislava (then Pressburg) was capital of Hungary. In 68 the city was occupied during the Warsaw Pact operation surpressing the Prague Spring. I always thought this photo was from Hungary though.

Sorry, just saw you posted the answer while I was writing.

That looks to be India, pre-color (I would assume). Perhaps WW2, although I don't think there were any operations in India in WW2...

The Japanese invaded India during the Burma Campaign. Looks like an Indian flag is to the right of the close tree. Looks like Brit MK-II helmets on the soldiers, possibly Gurkha.

Is this Imphal? Battle/Siege of Imphal? Or any part of the U-Go Offensive?

The Japanese invaded during the Burma campaign, leading to the Battles of Imphal and Kohima (Known as 'The Jungle Stalingrad'). There was also operations by the US Flying Tigers in which they flew over the Himalayas ('The Hump) to deliver supplies to Chinese nationalist forces.
