The effectiveness of the fireships is an interesting topic. In my opinion, their efficiency was dependent on how disciplined their target was. The Ottoman crews of the early 19th century were largely composed of conscripted sailors and officers with minimal training and experience. They were very prone to panicking, once a fireship was observed, which meant that the "suicide-bomber" could reach their ship relatively unopposed, unless the wind and the currents ran towards the opposite direction. In other cases, the results were much more disappointing: The Ottoman fireships failed in Navarino, although they almost managed to set ablaze a French ship, while Kanaris himself failed in a similar operation directed against the Egyptian port of Alexandria.

Anyway, next one also depicts ships of the line burning at night:

I would never post a decisive, French defeat! Chronologically, you are very close, but no French ship was sunk, captured or even damaged in that battle.

EDIT: Not Copenhagen either, the incident did not occur near Europe or Africa.

Absolutely correct! The Spanish command scuttled the naval squadron and surrendered the island without resistance, a rather defeatist attitutde, which the administration of King Charles IV didn't particularly appreciate.

Thanks recognised the picture (or something similar instantly). Bit lazy as had to google French foreign legion in Mexico rather than walk upstairs and check against a magazines account of the battle (which I still did) from quite along time ago.

Will likely post a new one tomorrow.

Could be a Battle of River Plate? I suspect the identity of the ship on first picture will be the key. It could be a Leander class cruiser...

Well done. You got it. Pictures were taken from the Achilles and its the Ajax in the distance on the top one while the lower one shows two Achilles crew members seeing a salvo from the Graf spee 5.9 guns hitting the water. Taken around 07:20 am apparently.

Huh. It was a wild guess, I didn't think it'll stick.

    Anyway, next one:
