Ye. I first thought it was Alexander I lying on the ground there but I haven't found the picture looking at Napoleonic Russia so I must be wrong there.

Davout right after his horse was shot below him whilst he continued to command the decisive flanking attack on the tower of Markgrafneusiedl, where the Austrians under Erzherzog Karl had their headquarters in the battle of Wagram.

The image is far too distorted to tell but that looks like a Panzer IV ausf D or E with the 7,5 cm L/23 gun. The PZ IV D and E entered production in 1940. That means that image was taken either from Russia or Africa - the image is too distorted to tell if its sand or mud or snow.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the battle of Bryansk

You're both doing well, just continue in the same direction. The tank is a Panzer IV F1 (I think), pay attention to the soldier's helmet and also to my tip that this is a mostly ignored prelude to a very famous big battle. The small one doesn't deserve being ignored that much because it had a huge impact.
I'd accept several of the "small" battles, all distinct and each with significant impact on the big battle, even though I'm relatively sure I know which one this picture is taken from.

That's one of the answers that I accept. The significance of the battle of Kalach, which you mention, is that it gave the Red army two more valuable weeks in preparing for Stalingrad, and had the Red Army keep one of the bridgeheads across the Don from which Uranus was launched. But there's also the battle of the 74th km station near Abganerovo, where the picture I posted was likely taken. Abganerovo took place simultaneously to that of Kalach, but not against Paulus' 6th Army, but Hoth's 4th Panzer Army. Abganerovo was even a tactical success for the Soviets, much more tank heavy and included even the use of an armoured train. Hence the captured Panzer IV F1 being towed by the Soviets in the picture. Usually the Germans held the ground, and thus there weren't that many opportunities for the Soviets in this area at the time to actually capture anything. Abganerovo had the same result as Kalach at roughly the same time to the west: Had either of them failed, the Germans would've reached Stalingrad sooner. As it played out, not only were the Soviets able to gain invaluable time, they were also able to retreat with the greatest part of the forces, losing "only" the 1st tank Army and 62nd Army. A sacrifice well worth it.

Then finally there's the 4 Kotluban offensives to the north, which went incredibly bad for the Soviets, but still were an operational success in that they limited the axis pressure on Stalingrad itself sufficiently so that the battle there could happen the way they did. It's also an answer that I would have accepted.

Of all those battles, the only one you can find a Wikipedia article in English on is Kalach, which is probably why you guessed this one, and the wiki doesn't pay that much attention to the bigger picture. The very heavy battles before Stalingrad, as well as the Kotluban offensives had a very significant impact on the battle of Stalingrad itself. All except Abganerovo (and even there only for a couple of days) were tactically absolutely defeats for the desperate red army. But he axis forces (always superior in numbers and quality for much of the battle) were already significantly weakened before they even reached the city itself, far from the easy walk through the steppe before the city as it's so often portrayed and thought of.

Nuff said from me, your turn.
