Okay I was just thinking the other day and I remembered that "armor" is spelled differently in Britain. I was wondering, was there any particular reason for this? Or did they just do this because they wanted a "different" language then Britain?

Spelling wise I guess it is just because it just changes over the years, pushed along by authors

I'm american, but I prefer the English way. I mean, Theatre, Colour, Honour, Labour, Metre...

I could go on forever, but it just looks better, and sounds better. Besides, England is superior to all.

    Quiet, John Bull.

Actually its not untrue...look at southern dialects, look at the hip hop dialects...all based on shortening words, mostly. "I say, sir, your new automobile looks so amazing" turns into "Yo homie, dats a fly new whip"...etc...

I think the British way is stupid and should be changed to the real way by force...

Ok, so maybe the British way is cooler. I actually always annoy me teachers of because I spell all those words the british way not the american way.

Most of these words are commonley used in England but have nothing to do with gangster slang, they've been around for a long time. Everyone I know says grub for food or ticker for heart and your old man is a mainly southern term. Pad though is used to describe your cell when your in nick. (prison) Its funny how these words have found there way into American criminal slang. They have no such connatations in England other than not really being the correct use of English.

Criminal Slang was a track by rapper Big L, who was a harlem rapper in the 90's...so the slang he uses in the track is pretty outdated by now, and not common many places outside New York. I know Chicago has a lot of its own local slang...for instance, dank means good (when not talking about herb), and square means cigarette, and when something is the **** it means its really good....etc...

Youre right, old man is not shorter than dad, but then I guess slang is not always meant to be shorter and easier to say, sometimes theres other reasons for the development of certain slang words.

That's Chicago slang? I've heard and said that everywhere, and I've never been to Chicago.

We fought the Revolutionary War over two hundred years ago for the right to spell colour color and you will not force us to go back and change it.
If the war decided the spelling, shouldn't we be spelling color couleur?

It was Noah Webster's idea. When he was making his english dictionary, he changed a ton of spellings to make American English different from British English. He also changed letters, besides just subtracting them. For example, he changed 's' to 'z' in a lot of cases, "patronize."
