Default Computer not detecting all the video memory

Dxdiag and Can you run it show my video memory at 241mb. I have a 6950 2gb. I reinstalled the drivers, even did a fresh install of windows and it still wont detect all the video memory. All the games have been running great but arma 2 also doesnt detect all the video memory and its causing alot of flickering and slowdowns. CCC detects everything fine and so does gpuz. Any ideas ?

Did you try reseating your video card?

Oh and can you post your system specs. It could help others help you.

Just tried that it didnt work and my specs are in my sig but I attached my dxdiag. Any help is appreciated and will changing the max memory in msconfig change anything?

    that is ...very strange.

    Display Memory: 241 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 2033 MB
    Shared Memory: 2303 MB

I dont need to do the sums, or even pull out the calc, that just dosent add up...

I would suggest returning the card, getting a replacement then seeing if that has any improvement.
I dont know how to explain this but a defective card, or perhaps a defective pci express slot.

You say you reseated the card, fresh installed windows...
Maybe someone else has a better idea whats going on but, my best guess is the card or slot is defective.

According to DXdiag it is detecting the right amount
Well no its not, it should read

    Display Memory: 4336 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 2033 MB
    Shared Memory: 2303 MB

Yea your right it may be the slot. I will test out my card on my friends computer tommorow. Also an update I went into advanced boot options and lowered max memory by about 250 and look how the dxdiag looks now...oh yea and arma2 is running a lot better about 20 fps better

    hmm very interesting.

    Display Memory: 3816 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 2034 MB
    Shared Memory: 1782 MB

generally doing what you did, is a trick to get round a defective RAM module. I suspect the problem is in fact your ram with this information.

    Follow this excellent guide

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...tics-tool.html

and run the tests, it should tell if and which module is defective.

What is your RAM configuration in terms of modules? 5GB is a strange amount to have installed.

Why do you think it's causing flickering and slowdowns? It isn't clear.

because in arma 2 for some reason developers decided to tie in video memory setting with how fast the game processes and loads textures. So if you set the resolution and graphical settings to high but leave the video memory on normal or low I guess the game doesnt know what to do. Setting the video memory settings higher in game fixes the problem but I was unable to switch the settings higher than normal while my dxdiag was only detecting 241mb. Now I set it ingame to very high and problem went away.

@Emperor Barroso unclicked the max memory was at 5120 and I just lowered it to 4850. When I checked on it after lowering max memory then rebooting the max memory was at 750mb. Unclicking it resets the max memory at 5120 again and my video memory goes back to 241mb for some reason.. Ill try card on another system but I doubt it, I have a feeling something might be wrong with the slot, luckily my motherboard has two but the fan collides with a wire in the other slot so I have to find a way to make it not collide with fan.

well i had quick look over your dxdiags again.

when you set the max memory 250 lower, this was the result.

    Memory: 5120MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 4076MB RAM

Max memory was actaully lowered by 1044mb

This would lead me to suspect the RAM still, as the difference could be explained by your two 512 modules, but it didnt detect errors in the diagnostic. It may be that for whatever reason the two chips are causing an issue with your 2gb modules and the 241mb that your GPU is attempting to share from the chips is causing the problem.

I doubt it is the port or GPU considering after you lowered the memory, all the dedicated memory from the card was allocated. So, i think it must be those two chips, even if the diagnostic is saying otherwise.

... So now you have no problem then?

Remove the two 512 modules, mixing RAM can cause all sorts of weird problems, the extra gig is negligable anyway.

That probably explains it. I guess MS might fix it eventually.

ok that does kinda explain it, ill probably remove the 2 512mb sticks and add another 2gb stick next week. but thanks everyone for now ill just do the work around if i wanna play arma 2.

to be honest your sig doesnt provide as much info as i want. Thats why i asked for your full system specs.. Problems could be with your mobo or ram. If you are mixing two different manufacturers rams that could cause problems as well. Always provide full system specs in your post or in your sig.. This includes Mobo, Ram with manufacturers and the sets you have, i.e. G. Skill Ripjaws x 2x4gb 1600MHz... Good information to know We would also like to know what your PSU is, and any extra parts that you may have in your computer; HDD's, optical drives, fans (maybe not really needed), External USB mounts. Anything that goes into your computer and information about those parts helps others to help you.

Yea I know my bad, but anyways taking off the two 512 modules fixed the problem. Thanks for the help everyone. I was helped out here quicker than on the AMD site and the MSI support just said reinstall drivers.
