England declared war on me and they keep besieging 2 of my cities, and I'm trying to stay on the popes good side, because I really want access to knights templar guild but I cant seem to get England to stop there nonsense.

Well the only way is to either a lot of money or take a lot of their cities. If you take a few then they will eventually come to you with a ceasefire.

TIP: Use counter-offer and you'll see it's Very Generous of you to sign a ceasefire, so demand a region from them and it'll be balanced. If you want to be absolutely sure you get it, then throw in a few thousand florins so it's generous.

If it's early game, kill them off. Pope only really starts throwing his toys around after you get a few provinces at the start of the game. If you've got a diplomat on the way to rome to offer tribute and alliance, even better. You'll never have to worry about him again.

Ceasefire -> gift $ (to improve relations quite a bit) -> alliance does wonders.

I'm pretty sure the Pope doesn't get mad at you for defending your lands. And usually if you get the message from the Pope to call a ceasefire so did the other faction, so if they attack they will be excommunicated and you can murder them.

This is true. For example in my campaign the Pope ordered me to stop fighting with Scotland. Then the very next turn Scotland besieged one of my cities and were excommunicated.

It's rather an exception than a rule - many times I was besieged right after Pope's intervention but only twice the attackers got excommunicated.

He's asking how to get a ceasefire, not how to excommunicate them and then slaughter

But slaughter is fun, afterall you can't have slaughter without laughter.

I was just giving an alternative route to what I took as the main reason for wanting the ceasefire: Papal Favor.
