I always wanted to start a thread like this! The Who is one of the best 60s-70s rock bands. There early stuff are so powerful compared to what was out there at the time (My Generation was the first punk song ever written, and it's timeless, people will be able to relate to that song for centuries). Then there are two of the greatest rock operas, Tommy and Quadrophenia with first embodying the 60s spirit and the latter being a very complex and unique album, capturing the esssence of youth subcultures, who appear and fade away. Who's Next is indisputabely an almost perfect rock album. No fillers, full of memorable songs. The other albums are great as well: The Who By Numbers is so bitter yet strong, and Who Are You is impressive, as well. Face Dances was surprisingly good, eve without Moon. It's Hard was disappointing (why Rolling Stone like that thing is a mystery), but the latest one, Endless Wire was a lot better.
All four of them were unique: Pete Townshend was a master of the synthesizer, and capable of creating memorable riffs, and write excellent lyrics. Roger Daltrey is still one of the best vocalists around. Keith Moon was a crazy weirdo, and a great drummer, he played like a madman, and is still considered an idol. And finally John Entwistle, the silent storm, always stood there as if he was bored. Well he was not, he was just too busy playing the bass in a most clever way. The fisrt bass player that people actually cared about.
Did I mention that they used to be the most exciting live band? Sure the Allmans had the Jams, and the Stones had style, but these guys were explosive (literally)!
