    Default Laptop HD replacement

The HD in my Toshiba Satellite L555 is defective and needs to be replaced. The physical aspect of replacing it seems easy enough, and I do have a recovery cds that I made myself prior to HD failure. Is a new HD and those recovery cds all I need to get my computer and OS up and running again? What should I look for when buying a new HD? The size of my original HD is 222 gb (I think)

Please don't get this thread confused with my other "PSI.sys Error" thread. They're two different computers. Thanks

for installing windows a new this is the thread that you are looking for: http://forum.notebookreview.com/wind...e-posting.html

    and yes its legal.

if you dont want to go that route, you can always use the recovery cds that came with your lappie

for HDD, depends on what you want, but basically what you need to know is that the drive you are looking for is 2.5'' and 9.5mm in height, there are even now 1tb drives for laptops, it costs 90 on newegg.

If I ever did anything with my lappy, I'd want one of those

And yes, your recovery disks should be all you need. If you're asked for a windows product key then check the laptop's external casing for a sticker with it printed.

I worked laptop telephone tech support for 4 years, IIRC it always worked for the 1000s of customers I dealt with.

But sometimes the manufacturers do stupid stuff like sticking the code inside the battery compartment... Can't remember if Toshiba was one of those

I always had to call MS to get it working, there are some models that come with the code inside the battery compartment, which is a great idea since the code would always peel off when on the bottom

A great idea is writing it down, but I see the point you're making

yeah stupid as it sounds I always wrote it down (yay! good for me!) but always would lose it because of something

    @op

get whichever is cheaper, there isnt much a difference in speeds regarding the 7200 and 5400 rpm options, with the notable exception of the seagate momentus XT (which is a drive that I dont like, but the idea is good)

get the storage that you think you need Im going for the 1tb samsung m8, and Im going to use it in the regular bay and put my SSD in a caddy, this is after I buy 8gb for my little precious mbp, hehehehe

Funniest is when someone has noted it in a .txt file in their laptop

indeed tried that way (dumbest thing ever!), but I always forgot to save it on a external HDD, and when I did, the external HDD went bad, oh well, now I got a more reliable external HDD for those things and the key for windows 7 pro is there, and the windows 2003 and 2008 r2 too

I need to buy a mbp caddy do you know a good place?

Thanks! I'm looking for a HDD around $50,I'm kind on a budget. Best Buy offered one for around that price, but I didn't ask about g storage. I don't think I need a terabyte or anything way up there. Any suggestions?

resolved it, Im probably getting one from maxupgrades, I will get the 1tb samsung m8 with the caddy (it means I will replace the ODD, with a HDD, in an enclosure so that it wont wobble) and a external ODD enclosure for 170, quite more expensive than to go the ebay route, but it will give me less headaches or so I think. So I will have a 1tb HDD + 120gb SSD, now Im just hoping that this wont kill my battery life of 12h

So i Just got the seagate momentous 250 HDD, hope it last. Out of curiosity, can you run a laptop on an external hdd alone (without an internal), and if so, would you recommend it?

So its only been a day since I got my laptop running again and I got a Toshiba HDD alert , they same kind I used to get with my old HDD before died. I only got this alert after an update. Do you think it could be an update or the HDD that's giving me problems? I'm using windows 7 64 bit. I should also mention that this HDD doesn't seem to as fast as my old one, maybe it's defective? Anyway I'm going check it for errors.

run any disk utilities that you have available, to check the health of the HDD
