get a diplomat and marry a foreign princess. its far more beneficial than having the average marriage with a common nobles daughter and u get a marriage alliance.
your heir gets the bonus from the princess traits and your children gonna have both your heirs and the princess blood. lets say my prince being german marries a french princess. the children will be both of german and french blood having the boni that come with the traits "of german blood" and "of french blood". in my current campaign i try to mix all european bloodlines into my ruling house, means i don't use adoptions and marry my princesses to foreign family members that join then my family.

The game seems to prefer adoption when there's a lack of family members and after that it usually offers suitable husbands for female family members and very rarely does it offer brides to unmarried male family members even if they are heir or faction leader.

Even when I didn't recruit any generals and went down to 6 male family members in my current campaign while owning around 30 settlements my heir never wanted to marry anyone until I found an foreign princess for him. The game just offered adoptions turn after turn.

So like said the most viable option is to send diplomats to find some foreign princess. Maybe a spy too to find out how charming or not so charming traits they have.

Royal family is one of the most annoying things in this game. I mean - it is great, it's fun, but sometimes it gives a headache. This time I decided to maintain more "pure" family - without adoptions. I made only one exception - soon my king wanted to adopt a person with my name (I added it to the names list) so I of course added him and thus created my own family's line within the royal house. At the beginning things were running smoothly - king (Piast line) had sons, heir had sons, his heir had sons etc. The same thing with my family's line - adopted guy had his own son, then grandson etc (I even married him to a princess to give him "polish blood"). But suddenly everythning collapsed. For 20, maybe 30 years no child was born, no bride/berothed presented, even no adoptions occured. All family members (both royal, and "mine") became old and thet still had no children. I know - I've read somewhere that one of the solutions is to expand the kingdom and conquer new provinces, but I don't think it's the case here. I've played this game maaaaaany times before and never had such problems even with smaller number of provinces. In my previous game I was adopting people normally, had plenty of family members (of course it was not a pure royal family, because there was little "biological sons") with smaller number of provinces. And in this actual game I was in constant shortage of family members - by the time when suddenly all my family members became infertile only about 1/3 of my settlements was governed by them. So I had much less family members than cities/castles, yet they still decided not to breed.

Things even did not change when I conquered huge parts of Novogrod.

But that's not the worst thing. I still had two the most important people - heir (unmarried) and my "ancestor's" (the branch of royal family with my name that I added to the Polish names list) still unmarried son. So I roamed though Europe and finally found a suiable princess for my heir (Venetian IIRC). She was incredibly charming. I orchestrated a wedding, she married my last hope of the royal line (single son of the king, last suitable male heir of the Piast family) and... she had the "infertile" trait. The same thing with my "ancestor's" son. I married him to a princess - the most charming polish princess (he was also the last male and the only hope to preserve the family line) and she too was infertile!

So for the next 20 years they (both lines) had no children. In the vast country (Poland, conquered Bohemia, Magdeburg, whole Lithuania and Novogrod) I had only few family members and among them one last and getting old heir to the throne and one old "ancestor"- both with old, infertile wives.

But it appeared they were not so inferile - both lines enjoyed the child births. Heir's wife gave him a daughter (she's old, so she probably won't give him more children) and my ancestor's wife gave him... two daughters.

    AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

So, as I said, royal family is a great fun to watch and administrate, but sometimes it simply decides to break down and then the whole fun is gone.

I love the royal family in this but I wish we could change our heirs.

Wait until itīs fixed and install <a href="http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=436011#D" target="_blank">Royal Ladies of the Court (RLC) for 6.4</a>
In this submod you can "build" princesses and marry them afterwards...
