    Default Experience Useless?

Alright, I wanted to run some tests to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

I've heard it said that even though it isn't registered on the unit roster, the chevrons really do increase the attack and defense by one each chevron.

So here's what I did: Dismounted Huscarl, 2 chevrons, bronze shield vs. Armoured Sergeants, no experience, no chevrons. On Normal in the Grassy Plain.

The Dismounted Huscarls lost only 21 men. To the enemy whose unit was destroyed.

So second test: Same as the first except now the Huscarls have all gold chevrons; six in total.

The Dismounted Huscarls lost 37 men, to the enemy who again was destroyed.

Now, this seems to be defying logic as to a better experienced unit loses more than a regular. Why? It kills the purpose of getting experience. Is there a way to change the unit experience register like in Rome?

(I would also personally like to see gold and silver shields and swords return, but I know that's not happening).

+1 attack and defense for every 3 chevrons, not every 1 chevron.

That's not a very good test. You should have done identical units, but one with a number of chevrons and the other with none. You also should have tested a) them charging each other, b) chevrons charging green troops, c) green troops charging chevrons, and d) both walking into combat.

Yep. It's also Defense Skill, which is virtually useless against ranged attackers. In Rome, though, it was every 1 chevron.

Oh, and by the way, you can just check on the unit cards. Contrary to your beliefs, they do show the difference.

The OP needs to run more than one test on each lvl also. There is a definite element of randomness to any fight and often test battles are altered by unit width, when/if the captain dies etc.

    EDIT

does he say all gold chevrons, 6 in total

    This

As far as I know the main positive of experienced troops is that they have a better morale and won't rout as easily as green units.

well the experience system is not at all beneficial or realistic.

The morale factor make a huge difference, especially if it's for a unit like elephants or elephant artillery.

But your right that in real life, a highly experienced unit would be promoted to a new unit, such as from Mameluk to Royal Mameluk.

Experience also increase morale, maybe accuracy for ranged units but I'm not sure.

Well, they get losses, it's inevitable in medieval warfare that they get losses. That's just how it was, no matter how much experience or chevrons you have!

Actually, they don't gain defense. As far as I can tell, they gain only attack bonuses and it's something along the lines of +1 for every 3 chevrons... Even though I cannot recall any of my units with golden chevrons getting +3, nor +2.

That is only in kingdoms, which is why kingdom modders tend to make units have low attack values and high defense values. But they increase the morale level so high that it pretty much nullify's morale bonus in most cases.

When setting up a custom battle, you can hover the mouse over a unit and it will give you their stats (basic information compared to in the campaign). You can then chevron them up and check out the stats then, so there is a difference.

I know I would rather have gold chevroned units than nonexperienced ones anyway .

The sad thing is that for archers exp is useless as the last thing you want is to put them in melee to use that attack bonus..

No it increases morale to. Some say it increases accuracy but I haven't seen this affect in game.

I got a culverine unit up to 2x gold chevrons in the Americas campaign (thanks to the hordes of native infantry that sits there on the hill with their archers), but the culverine was still as inaccurate as it every was.
