Self explanatory. I'm using the Eras Total Conquest mod, doesn't change much though.

Could somebody explain what exactly happens? What if they don't attack? Have I just wasted a million florins?

Well, I don't use this diplomatic option to make other factions go to war as it is generally unsuccessful, I just offer "Attack faction X" as a gift along with 100 florins to any faction I possibly can (It's best if it is your ally) before I attack a faction, to negate the negative effects that attacking a faction has on your reputation.

If you offer to attack a faction and keep your word (Attack it), then your reputation will rise. That's the only reason I use this feature.

All that happened for me after i asked them to attack a faction was that my ally moved an army right next to my capital city, so they act as reinforcements if it was attacked. I guess it can be seen as attacking, but only if the enemy attacks me first

As Nazgūl says it works great as a gift. I use it with my allies all the the time on a common enemy...makes an alliance work as a relationship informing them what you are doing as I see it. Sometimes that means I've actually had millitary assistance on the battlefield from them as well not just the offer of assistance.

I've tried it before, but I never managed to be successful. I might have to try this 'gifting' strategy, offering money in exchange for my demands.

    thanks for the info guys.

Here's my situation : I'm Cyprus and I'm isolating myself from the known world. Problem is HRE are destroying the rest of it. The annoying thing is the retaliation from the other AI factions is weak even though most of their (HRE) settlements are empty! Is there any way to get them to somehow attack the HRE (I've got enough money to bankroll them). I've been sending diplmoats all over the place to try and get them to attack. Does it simply not work?

I just attack the enemy when he is standing next to my ally. Then we are at war together! What's the point of having allies if they don't war with your enemies? I say drag the buggers into war when they're not expecting it.

An excellent strategy. As the Romans in BC, I used this to get the 2nd Crusade's armies to smash the Turk's biggest armies (at the cost of Friedrich Barbarossa's life, but eh, history had him dying in a less useful and more embarrassing manner thus enabling me to launch a successful invasion of Turkish Anatolia. I also used it to force the now-weakened KoJ into my massive campaign against the mighty Ayyubids.
