    Default Pillum question

    Hello

How do you remove the pillum? I would like the legionaries to use sword only, because I think its anoying, when they have to use all their pillums to charge in a normal way. Anyone who knows how to do it?

and I have checked the forum.......

    Regards Wiezma

You can get your legionaires to charge without thrwing their pilum by holding alt + clicking. Making them have just swords would require editing the model.

Try setting the pilum bearer's missile attack to zero. They will no longer be able to use it IIRC, their ammo will be set to zero when this happens (at least it worked that way for other missile units back in 1.2.) This would avoid any need for editing the model. Another way would be to set their ammo to zero. That worked as well back in 1.2. "1" ammo was right out though, it exited back to the desktop.

One thing you might see with either of these is a bug where the officer has no weapon. In battle once a missile unit runs out of ammo, the officer's weapon disappears, LOL. Probably happens because the code eliminates the "primary weapon" for everyone in the unit...

Won't work, they will stil have pilum as their primary weapon, and will try to fight with them in melee.

    Didn't think of that :o

It's very easy to fix in 3D Studio Max. I might get around to it sometime.

Whats the point? Its easy enough to get them to secondary attack and use their swords.

Looks like the new 1.3/1.5 files have changed the mechanics of this considerably compared to 1.2. If I give them 0 ammo for their pila they now get 1 round automatically--that's new! (Now I need to see if "1" CTD's.) If I give them 0 missile attack they start with pila, but don't throw since they don't have ammo and the fields for missile are grayed you. Instead they march up with their non-existent pila...then switch to sword, charge, and switch in melee to their non-existent pila in an overhead hoplite style thrust. Yes, it is rather odd...not at all like 1.2. (I hunted down my old 1.2 info on the subject before posting originally.) The new BI based exe for RTW is a whole 'nother critter.

    Merged double posts

Also, a separate but important consideration: removing the pilum greatly reduces the "relative strength indication" for the unit. This is something I noticed a few weeks ago. I do not know if it effects autocalc (though I suspect it does.) I noticed this originally while testing missile armed chariots but it seems to hold for hastati in these new tests--their missile attack is about doubling their relative strength on the slider bar. So removing the pilum will change some AI calcs as well.

    Thanks for the many replies

I have tried to edit the export unit file, but I didn't work. I will just go with the easy one: holding alt ..........Thank you
