well, i am hardcore Stargate fan, as many of you may already know, but i recently got involved with standalone mod for c&c renegade, that is based on Battlestar galactica. now, i would like to ask, if its worth to check out BSG or not.
PS! you can discuss all topics related to these 2 shows (well, Stargate is franchise) here as well.
PPS! if anyone is interested of that mod (wich is very good), just contact me and i will send you the link to forums, im not going to advertise in here, unless i have clear permission from staff. so, want the mod- contact me, its kind of hard mod to find on your own.

I recently bought the first season of Stargate to see if it is any good...Next I will try Battlestar for the same reason. I am trying to expand my horizons on TV shows.

two completely different series imo you can't really do a "vs" for these

BSG is a good sci-fi series but if you are basing on "if I like stargate will I like this" i can't answer that question.

bsg season 4 doesnt apply it was THAT BAD. season 3 was meh ok ; badly thought out but what can you do without a super huge budget.
bsg season 1 and 2 are easily prefered, at least for me; in favor of stargate.
however, my favorite stargate is stargate universe because there are considerably less lame moments (each character takes turns each week to risk their lives at the objections of their friends in sg1/atlantis)
but universe doesnt come close to season 1 or 2 of bsg. it absolutely dominates season 3 and 4 however so sort of a 50/50 answer

Stargate is more about surviving. BSG is more of a hardcore drama, with lots of Cylons and shooting. The new show is great if you can stand Edward James Olmos' face, but the original BSG I feel just tried to copy star trek. I recommend if you have a netflix account to watch it on your computer for free. They have the old and new ones. BSG is pretty awesome, and more science fiction and has more adult themes, so it's not for children.

I agree about Season 4, New Caprica was that shows jumped the shark moment.

Stargate is just a fun show like the original Star Trek. Exploration episodic fun.

I liked the show up until they decided to go over the top first with Anubis which I didn't mind so much then the Ori was just ridiculous. I actually liked the new cast and if they stuck with the older formula with new characters I would of liked it

BSG is a great show but I think in coming years I will end up liking Stargate more in fact thinking of it now I know I like Stargate more. Its just that BSG was just so good to start and on top of it the show had great drama and action plus its space scenes were amazing. Its just that Stargate captured that old Star Trek feel perfectly that Star Trek franchise had failed to do since The Next Generation and that show did it so well that it simply was amazing. When they tried to do Universe trying to make a BSG type show that was a travesty imo.

I know many people will disagree with me about BSG but if it wasn't for that final season it would be the best sci-fi show i've ever seen. That last season ruined it for me like the new trilogy and terrible cartoon ruined Star Wars for me.

i will have to disagree with your comparison about star trek and stargate: star trek s...s in my opinion, however Stargate= best show ever, if you outclude universe c..p.
Anubis was interesting villain in my opinion, but it is also least favourite one. about the Ori- i even kind of liked them, since i like, how they imported medieval europe religious fanaticism to sci-fi. And when Adria joined... than it became very interesting, since adria was basically like jesus for christians. i also like, how sg-1 finally found opponent they couldnt defeat every turn, since in case of goa'uld it was one system lord down, second one down, etc.

I feel like its Star Trek because many of the Stargate episodes seemed to directly mirror TOS episodes with less campyness.

Not so much The Next Generation but more the original series. Like I can think of a few episodes that would translate seemlessly into Stargate. Don't know their names but the episode with Charlie, Spocks Brain, the Silicon life form, the episode with the guy that gets psychic powers and trys to take the ship outside the galaxy, the episodes with Mudd, the tribbles.... all of those just seems like they were pretty much the formula for many Stargate episodes and that is a major reason why I loved that show. I can think of so many TOS episodes that Stargate seemed to be so similar to.

Every modern sci-fi has to be about big bads and overarching plots that cover multiple seasons and Stargate usually dabbled in that for a few episodes and went back to that other format for a few more. I enjoyed that quite a bit. The whole exploring plot lead to that and its what made the show amazing. By the time the Ori hit they completely abandoned that concept and the show wasn't nearly as good.

When Stargate who on Showtime it seemed that the whole TOS format was what the show was all about.

I prefer BSG for better character development and underlying philosophical value. It's more serious than stargate.

So far I'm enjoying Stargate SG-1...I recently ordered Seasons 2-4 and will watch those as well. After SG-1, I am guessing (more confirmation from other viewers would be nice) that Atlantis is worth checking out.

As for BSG, I will likely wait until next year before trying out that show. I'm not happy that the series was split up for DVD releases (this stupid 2.0/2.5 bullcrap)...So it will likely be a slow start for me on that show lol.

Yea Atlantis is really not worth checking out, I basically faced palmed the entire time I was watching it, acting is horrible, along with a terrible script and an overall poorly executed good idea.

Analysis should not be diverted by reflections upon the zeal with which the victors at the end of the Second World War punished the defeated for war crimes. The victors were animated by the ideals of the Atlantic Charter and of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was about to peep over the eastern horizon. But first, they wanted a little hanging.

I sort of liked it. There are some terrible characters (like teyla, who had the charisma of a brick or Ford) and the dialogue is face palm worthy at times.

However some characters were good like McKay, Beckett, Sheppard and I liked Weir. I enjoyed the concept of the series and I did really enjoy most episodes.

For Atlantis I'd say to check it out and see what you think of it. You might like it or you might hate it. It does seem to divide alot of stargate fans (Although not as much as Universe does)

I like it a lot. I love sci-fi and I love mythology, so you can imagine how giddy I am over this kind of show.

The only thing I don't like is that it has a vast majority of stand-alones rather than a balanced amount of episodes devoted to bringing down the main villain (in this season, Apophis obviously). I liked X-Files because it had a good balance of stand-alones as well as the episodes devoted to the storyline. In this season it seemed like there was only 5 of the 22 (or 21 if you count the pilot as only one) episodes devoted to the main story, unless I am forgetting any.

Does the amount of "storyline" episodes increase as the series goes on?

If I remember correctly some of the following seasons had more stand alone episodes and some had more of an over arcing plot episodes. I don't want to spoil it for you but it did depend more on what the plot for the season is.

However, seasons 9 and 10 have pretty much no stand alone episodes

Well, I'll be sure to do that. I'm into this franchise now

lol, thats how giddy i was, when i started and it has only increased
well, actually those "stand-alone" episodes (hopefully not a spoiler) may not be so stand-alone after all... there is more than one stand-alone episode (especially in first 3 seasons), wich proves to be quite important later in grand scheme. everything is not what it seems.... i mean thats what i liked about it as well: at first, not so important episode may become very important.
