A schiltrom is useful as a last ditch defence as your spearmen form a circle with all the spears pointing outwards, effective against cavalry. just a way to kill as many enemy as possible when you know you've lost the battle. Also means you won't get the morale damage from being flanked as you have no flanks on that unit.

A shield wall only protects your front flank and is usually on sword and axe units, keeps them unified and i think increases defence, i use it when defending gates or hills or passes. Spear units and pike units tend to have a spear wall formation, this is useful to completely slaughter cavalry that come through a bottleneck, like a city gate

The wedge formation is pretty useless, i prefer spreading out my cavalry in 2 ranks alongsie a few other cavalry units simarily aligned, then do a pelennor fields esque charge on the flank or rear of the enemy, prett much always routs them if you have enough cavalry. The wedge can be useful for driving through weaker units like militia or archers to get to stronger units behind them, but charging strong units head on with horse is often suicide.

    hope this helps

shield wall keeps enemy cavalry from pushing through your own formation, instead your units are the ones doing the pushing. managed to throw my enemy back outside the gate right into the boiling oil

Shieldwall is defensive and gives I think increased mass which allow to push forward. Also reduces stamina loss I think. At least in the dwarves in 3rd age have that but I guess its the same in SS.

Schitrom... I guess could be last ditch defensive but I use it to take a unit with that ability ahead of my main battle line every other unit to break up any cavalry charges as the charges tends to bunch up or move around the schitrom unit and slow down. Then the infantry waiting in the battle line can charge in. It also works on the flanks of a battleline of low morale units so a rout won't start on the flank.

Spearwall is what pikemen do... keeps the spears pointed forward and the mass higher to resist charges but works well vs infantry sometimes as well. Swiss Halberdiers and maybe a couple units other than pikes also have it. The formation become more vulnerable to flank attacks though- I think instead of alot of men turning to face a flank attack when spearwall is off only a few do so attacking units on the flank get more unanswered strikes. Often its the only way to defeat Papal Swiss Guards who never rout with infantry. Engage them from the front with another unit that has spear wall and then from the flanks with good units. They can chew thru much faster as long as the defending unit stay spear wall.

Shield wall increases defense and mass. It also allows your infantry to act like cavalry. When using shield wall click behind the enemy you want your troops to attack. They'll push and shove their way into the enemy's center. When they're in the middle click to attack the enemy and they'll burst from shield wall throwing the enemy into the air and trampling them underfoot. Not as effective as a cavalry charge but it'll get the job done.
