Seriously, nothing works

I downloaded TWrome gold from steam because I had lost the CD.

Then, I downloaded RSII and extracted the files into the 'rome total war gold' folder in the Steamapps common file. Ok: then I ran the launcher (I think it was with Rome faction, but later with others). The game launched, which is always a relief. Except I couldn't find the campaign or run custom battles either (when I click start on the battle, it simple goes back to the faction selection screen).

Then I downloaded the patch. Nothing improved.

Then I downloaded the steam launcher from the known issues sticky. This Paedric user who had posted it, wrote it was for steam users who could only play custom battles. Well, close enough, although I couldn't play custom battles either. Well, this launcher doesn't even launch the game for me: it simply does nothing when I click play.

My OS is XP

I downloaded the games from steam, so I presumed they have the latest patches (all other games I've downloaded have had them)

I didn't install Alexander even though it was included.

Install path -- my computer/d:/Games/STEAM/Steamapps/rome total war gold...

I've tried fiddling with everything on the launcher.

So please help me if you can, thnx

Could you please tell me if there is a SteamLauncherBI.bat file in the gold folder.
Also could you please copy the content of the launcher.ini file found in RSII\launcher and paste it here?

I just found that I have to use these launch options to play with steam:

-mod:play_Sarmatia -show_err -nm

You'll find launch options by right clicking on the game in your library, then selecting properties. The properties button is above "create desktop shortcut" button. Just copy-paste a line from this list. Then start BI from steam.

Try the play_one_turn - I seem to recall that is what must be used to play custom battles.....
