Install error: 'Please make sure you can locate and access file RS21.cab' (paraphrase)

Ok, so I've followed the install instructions exactly, copied my clean RTW to Program Files, created an RSII folder and downloaded all seven (for some reason I've got an extra msi Windows Installer Package called 'RS2 (1)' beside the regular 'RS2') into it. Opened the installer and selected my new RTW folder in PF as the destination. About 5 seconds into the install I get the error message. Bear in mind I can access the .cab file.

First, you'd better not put the RSII folder inside the program files.
Either something like C:\RSII or C:\games\RSII is good. It might save you a lot of headaches.

Since it seems you have all the files in the same folder (you have them, right?) maybe you should try to re-download the msi file from somewhere else, as you should only have one.

My RSII folder isn't in Program Files, just the new RTW one. Alright I'll try that, thanks.

Edit: I'm thinking the problem has something to do with my .cab files, I downloaded them, then moved them from my 'Downloads' folder to my RSII folder. The exact error message during installation is:

'Source file not found: C:\RSII\RS21.cab. Verify that the file exists and you can access it.'

Oh and my .cab files are in 'WinRAR Archive' format.

Ah, OK, what you want is something like this which I use:

D:\Games\RomeBase
D:\Games\RomaSurrectum
D:\Games\src

RomeBase is an installation of RTW with BI patched to 1.6. This is never used, it's just a base install.
I then copied the whole directory to D:\Games\RomaSurrectum

Then go to the src which is what you've called c:\games\RSII and run the exe. When it asks for the installation folder, use D:\Games\RomaSurrectum.

Should be all set.

Ah nvm, I downloaded my .cab files without the .cab, and then renamed them because I thought it'd cause an error. Actually the opposite was true; I renamed them back to their original 'RS21' etc and it worked. Thanks for the help guys.

It's probably because your OD does not show the extension of some files, even if they exist.

I always set up my folder options to show the extensions of files - it means I know what they are and can spot if the extension is missing.
