Default Another News of the World hacking scandal

Apparently they hacked into the murder victim Milly Dowler's phone and had her voicemails intercepted following her disappearance in 2002. Also its said that they deleted her voicemails 'to make space for other ones in case of a good story'

But the journalists at the News of the World then encountered a problem. Milly's voicemail box filled up and would accept no more messages. Apparently thirsty for more information from more voicemails, the paper intervened – and deleted the messages that had been left in the first few days after her disappearance. According to one source, this had a devastating effect: when her friends and family called again and discovered that her voicemail had been cleared, they concluded that this must have been done by Milly herself and, therefore, that she must still be alive. But she was not. The interference created false hope and extra agony for those who were misled by it.

    Quite disgusting if true.

Emergency commons debate to be held to see if there should be a public enquiry.

It's quite simply disgusting behaviour from the NotW, what I find most interesting is where the papers are reporting the story and how that may correspond to which other papers have been involved in phone hacking. So far the Telegraph, the Times, the Independant and the Guardian have all reported it as their main story on the front pages, whereas the likes of the Mail, the Sun and the Mirror haven't mentioned it on the front page at all It should really put the takeover of BSkyB on hold until the investigation and any possible enquiry is complete, if it turns out senior executives are involved then how can the Government justifiably allow the take over to go ahead.

Disgusting. Tabloid journalism needs to have a good long look at itself.

Agreed but the people who buy and read this crap really need to have a good long look at themselves.

I am not sure which I despise more, the tabloids or their audience.

Furthermore, this isn't the first time these clowns have been involved in something like this:

    Phone hacking scandal

Main article: News of the World phone hacking affair
In 2006, reporters at the paper used private investigators to illegally gain access to hundreds of mobile phone voicemail accounts held by a variety of people of interest to the newspaper. In 2007 the paper's royal correspondent, Clive Goodman, pleaded guilty to illegal interception of personal communication and was jailed for four months; the paper's editor, Andy Coulson, had resigned two weeks earlier. In 2009/2010, further revelations emerged on the extent of the phone hacking, and how it was common knowledge within the News of the World and its News International parent. According to a former reporter at the paper, "Everyone knew. The office cat knew," about the illegal activities used to scoop stories.[18] On January 17, 2011, The Guardian reported that Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator paid by the paper, testified that he had been asked by the newspaper's leadership to hack voicemail accounts on its behalf.[19] In April 2011, attorneys for the victims alleged that as many as 7,000 people had their phones hacked by the News of the World[20]; it was further revealed that the paper's owner, Rupert Murdoch, had attempted to pressure then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Labour Party MPs to "back away" from investigating the scandal.[21] Three journalists on the newspaper were arrested in: Ian Edmondson and Neville Thurlbeck on 5 April[22] and James Weatherup on 14 April.[23] The newspaper "unreservedly" apologised for its phone hacking activities during April 2011.[24] On 4 July 2011, it was disclosed that potential evidence had been deleted in Spring 2002 from the hacked voicemail account of Milly Dowler, then missing, but later found to have been murdered

You forgot to mention the worst thing about the deletion of the voicemails: it gave her parents hope that she was still alive, because they filled up her voicemail with messages, meaning that no more could be left and received that message when they tried to leave more, but suddenly after the News of the World had deleted some, they could leave more, thinking that she was deleting them.

Sorry I started typing my reply, went away, and came back, by which time you had already edited your OP.

I'd imagine missing mails again? If so that could be Obstruction of Justice (Or a similar charge) which goes way beyond hacking and straight into 'go to jail, go directly to jail, do no pass go' territory

Rupert Murdoch will surely wriggle his way out of trouble as per usual. Just the sight of that man sickens me.

I have serious doubts that Murdoch was ordering this kind of thing. Why is he a devil to you liberals anyways? Do you really hate the man for owning news companies that give the opposite side?

Anyways, seems like the management of this paper is screwed.

You mean lying propaganda outlets right? If they ran legtimate news it wouldn't be to bad, but they don't they are propaganda pure and simple. I he disgusts me for the same reason Geobbels does, both are right wing hate merchants

The "opposite side" of the truth being lies of course.

Not always. In fact, opinions literally can't be a lie.

News companies are supposed to supply news, not just opinions dressed up as such.

Of course they can. Saying the world is flat is, in fact, a lie, even if you sincerely believe it.

Whilst he might not have ordered the phone hacking, it is his responsibility to ensure that those people he ultimately employs act in a responsible and legal manner whilst undetaking work for his organisation.

What's he supposed to do to stop it? All he can do is fire those responsible and make sure the police know who they are.

Ensure that the necessary self-regulation is present to prevent such incidents occurring.
