    Default Hatred

I just started playing as Genoa on VH/H. I very quickly took both Pisa and Milan and thought; hey, this is going to be fun! But after very short time, it seems everyone hates me, and attack without reason.

I am currently at turn 14 and at war with: Venice, Fatimid, France, HRE, Portugal, Moors, Hungary, Kievan rus, Sicily. Thats 9 enemies of which one was attacked by me (Moors). The rest attacks at random and throws everything against me, France even attacked me when relations was at Very Good!

Q: Why? Is it because I'm playing on VH? So to make the game harder for me? It isn't very realistic, something i was looking for when i installed SS.

    Playing with Savage AI btw...

    Thanks

Maybe you're not strong enough and the other factions attack you ....

It is partially your position. Relatively weak compared to surrounding powers and bordering many factions. VH the AI is more aggressive even on Savage and often 1 enemy AI bribe another or establish an alliance. The only thing I don't like about Genoa is that often France seems completely single minded in its attacks. I've seen it lose the entire rest of its kingdom to England just because it sent every single army to try and capture Marseilles.

Only Hungary and Fatimids seem a bit off in your wars above. Kiev always goes for Caffa while Venice, HRE, and France are natural enemies. Sicily you have a 50% chance of fighting if the AI decides it wants Corsica or Sardinia. Often it goes into N Africa or Greece though and leaves you alone. Portugal often becomes vassals of Moors and dragged into wars so that isn't unusual or for some reason it often sends a fleet to attack Genoa's port and then does nothing else.

Ah thanks, that makes alot of sense! Portugal, Hungary and Fatimids blockaded my ports, but did nothing else really after i fought them off. France did indeed attack me at Marseilles with two stacks.

Thanks for clearing that up, i think i'm going to ragequit my Genoa campaign for now, all of my armies are depleted due to frequent attacks on Milan, there's no point of continuing. lol

Just try Scotland for a peaceful campaign
You only get to fight England and maybe Norway, but personally I really hate their unit composition.

Your reputation is probably crap... it's not rare to see France or Fatimids attacking you when you play Genoa, but nations as Portugal only jump you when you have pretty bad reputation. Besides, if you had allied France it would've been much easier for you....

Basically with any nation that is in the middle of things (genoa, venice, HRE, ERE, etc) it's wise to make alliances with every neighbour early on except maybe one and wait until this one guy attacks you, or even ally him as well and just go crusading for expansion.

In late genoa specifically I would also give caffa up to one of my neighbours to occupy him with a war against the Kievan Rus. It doesn't seem worth defending it, and if you instead expand in that area you'll be facing the Mongols.

EDIT: Consider increasing your reputation as well by occupying settlements and releasing prisoners if you can.

    Well, there's several factors involved.
One is that each faction have certain settlements they consider their own. For instance, Venice would probably consider Milan and Pisa as part of their natural expansion area.
Another faction is relative faction strength. Both France and the HRE would consider themselves vastly more powerful than you, and thusly consider you 'easy pickings' which would heighten their willingness to go to war with you.
Then there's the fact that the more factions you're at war with, the more other factions are willing to go to war with you, thinking "They're spread thin already, I can probably take their settlements easily then.
Then finally there's your general reputation. Being at war reduces your reputation, even if you weren't the one to initiate the combat. A low reputation also makes the AI more likely to attack you.

... you guys are american, right?

Yeah, only Americans... Russians, Polish, English and a few others under formerly communist regimes would think that.

Actually I don't think k/t started out as an American. I don't think communists are the same as socialists but I know people who think so.

Socialism = Communism seems to be an very American point of view, from the time where Duck and Cover would save you from nuclear attacks. At least I've only ever heard such nonsense from Americans.
    Anyway, this is mighty off-topic.

GOOGLE TRANSLATE of the Norwegian wikipedia:

"Norway is a representative parliamentary democracy and a rule of law. Since 1814, the country had a democratic constitution in accordance with the principle of sovereignty of the people, as well as the press and freedom of speech. After 1814, religious freedom, human rights, freedom of speech and a multi-party system has been incorporated into the political system. Sovereignty is managed by the people through elections to the Parliament"

No communism there ;-) And about the off-topic thing, I already got the answer to my question, therefor this topic has no other uses than discussion of communism.. lol
