    Default Roman Campaign

    Similar to Massalian campaign thread.

Playing BI with Huge units, high veg, models etc except grasses. Manage all settlements, no battle time limit.

I avoided batlle with Hannibal on first turn, abandoned Emporiae and sailed the garrison home, just abandoned Dyrrhachium too,

Rebels took Tarentum and Rhegion and besieged Crotona and Capua but I've defeated both of those siege armies and retaken Tarentum. Rhegion is besieged. Hannibal still on the loose, he's next.

I've had 2 awards, Publius Scipio was given Corona Triumphalis and Quintus Maximus Legatus Legonis.

What would you find helpful? screenshot of the end-of-turn notes? end of battle stats?

Yes, screens of the battles where they won the awards; and when they should have but did not; at least for now.
Also, how is the economy going on, the traits/ancillaries your governors/generals have, ...

OK, some battle stats and end of turn announcements, I missed the stats for the first battle I mentioned originally.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

First, battle in Apulia and Liguria:

The end of turn gave the following:

then 538, retook Rhegion (only two defending units so not expecting big stats here) then defeated Hannibal. Nasty, nearly lost that one.

and the national announcements at the end of 539 auc.

Let me know what else you want. I maybe ought to invest in fraps paid version rather than save, convert with gimp and upload

Also, not sure this is wrong, after the rebellion, I ended up with 2 Greek Tarantine Cavalry in Capua, don't recall seeing that before but it's been a while so maybe that is just randomness that happens.

i wasn't clear sorry, I meant the end battle result with both the ennemy and yours death/killed to see against what odds the awards were given.
Though those screens are interesting too.

And you can do bulk convert with the dds converter.

OK, probably have them too, just not converted. I'll try DDS. For Hannibal battle:

Publius Cornelius Scipio: deployed 4811 kills 3283 remaining 2294
    Hannibal : 3808 kills 2932 remaining 465

Actually, now I think of it, I was reinforced but only stats for PC Scipio were shown. Both generals were alive at the end. I'll get the screenshot tomorrow.

how about some Romans with Muscle Cuirass!? Or some Galatians with iron Muscle Cuirass and Bearded Mask for the Selucids like in the images here!? Maybe for I don't know Capua and Galatia!?

Man I sure hope we will have some nice Campanians, Samnites and Oscans for Capua! Oh wait we already do! There are some nice Campanian Cavalrymen in!

For the traits, do we need a longer campaign to see them really take effect or not? I seem to have a bit of a slow start right now - I'm not a blitzer, but I can take some more risks and be more aggressive if it will make the traits show quicker, and I can start auto-resolving battles to make things quicker.

Also, in line with that, if I start a new campaign with small unit sizes, it will make battles etc quicker (or should) so would it be better to use them for other campaigns? We should expect same behaviour for huge through to small unit sizes anyway- but I guess that's one of the tests whether things are the same.

Auto resolve is not a good idea as a lot of what we're interested in is Roman military career progression and decorations which you are unlikely to gain so much if you autoresolve. So yes, a longer campaign is likely to be needed.

So I spent 3/4 of an hour taking Genoa last night and it crashed. However in this case I can safely blame myself for not checking my scan schedule which kicked off a malware scan just as I was about to finish the last few off in the square and made my PC become unstable. Sigh. Guess I'm taking it again tonight, this will finish off the Carthaginians in Italy, then take Emporiae back and Syracuse and I've got the armies built to do that. time for a bit of arse kicking expansion.

    An update on traits gained.

    Quintus Fabius Maximus
Former Dictator. Faction Leader, has won quite a few battles but reviewing the end of turn screens, I can't see he's gained any traits.

Sextus Fabius Maximus - Successor - taken Genoa, Tribunus Militi

Lucius Vibius Atellus - Quastor/Former Quaestor -> Praetor
Gauis Flaminus Nepos - Legatus Leionis -> Censor -> Former Censor
    Aulius Genucius Cjpus -> Lawyer
Gnaeus Servilius Geminus -> Legatus -> Censor
    Quintus Fulvius Flasccus -> Quaestor
    Quintus Caecilius Metellus -> Quastor
Gaius Terentius Varro -> Quastor -> Curale Aedile
Publius Cornelius Scipio -> took Rhegion from Rebels and beat Hannibal.
    Tribunus Militi

Titus Minucius Thermus -> Negotiatores - He has been in (Corsica?) I think since the start.

Spurius Iulius Bursio -> Governor of Rhegion -> Publicani

    Odd behaviour in Emporiae.

It's turned Barbarian! but it's a Roman rebel territory and has been since I abandoned it. Still, was fun to attack it.

That said a couple of things. I went in the front entrance, but troops sent round the back wouldn't enter until they chased a rebel unit back through the gate. I should have placed them there to start the battle but didn't so sent them round which wasn't as successful as it could have been.

Horses were vertical on the earthworks!

The gates are really great to look at. They were open and I didn't have a spy there, is that expected?

    Anyway, some screenshots:

    The first Gate

    Entering it

    Clever horses!

    All a bit jumbled here

Very lovely back gate with two gateways!

The gates will always be open as these walls aren't coded in the normal way. I think I explained that there's no easy way round that one due to the restrictions on coding boundaries to settlements.

Ok, I thought that's what you had said.
Just to confirm however, I had no siege equipment except rams which I quickly abandoned. The AI sent their ballistas and one cohort out immediately which I quickly got rid of. 1 unit of spearmen to guard the gate, again, defeated easily, then left the rest in the main square. You can take these if they are not defended well, but if you had any kind of missile troops on top and behind the gate and spearmen and infantry just inside, they will take a lot of effort to get into - which is great to my mind, I love breaking a tough siege.

The other point was that this was the old Roman settlement of Emporiae (the one in Spain) so whether it should actually have been barbarian at all is my point, it had never been anything but Roman/Roman Rebel. I never looked at it, just built some rams assuming that it had walls and was surprised when I attacked that it wasn't. Good challenge though. Just one of those things people will mention if it is Barbarian if they lose it.

Mind you, it also means you should check the settlement when besieging to see what you will need, Rams would be useless as would ladders.

Emporion was a Greek colony if I remember correctly - so why is it that we have it as a barbarian style town?

it was in a barbarian land just a trading colony no actual greeks except traders the town would have been built by the natives.

I just had a repeatable CTD, 552 Winter, during the Belgae's turn. I may have autosave on though. So, can I turn that off and repeat from that point or does it need a new campaign? Also, I have toggled FOW but not following AI characters, again can I turn that on from that point? Finally I'm not sure what compression I have but I can get whatever is best to do that, WinRAR, 7-zip etc, any preference? assuming of course I can repeat with follow characters and autosave off.

[edit] I ran with follow all AI characters and it went past this but failed again next turn with the Belgae again. I can't see how to turn off auto-save in the campaign so I guess I'll be starting a new one.

    1. I think you can turn auto_save off and proceed. I've done it before, but it's been a while. (I have a standard "preferences" file backed up that I just past into any directory I need it. Saves making all those changes again.)

    2. Following characters can be toggled on and off, like FOW.

    3. I know Tone/DVK have both used WinZip (which you can open on Windows machine) and 7-zip files from me.
