    Default RTW is the Best?

I think that RTW is the best total war. I don't know about anyone else but the first thing I notice about other TW's (especially M2TW) is that the combat system feels unnatural. (This might be due to the differing styles of warfare which each of these games encompass). In RTW there are clashes of infantry, In M2TW the infantry merely runs into each other. RTW just has so many great attributes about it, im not too concerned with games when it comes to graphics (Shogun 2 is pretty but i look for other stuff). Having not tried out Shogun 2 yet (dont know if i ever will) I'll try not to sound completely like an idiot, but when I play RTW i just get more enjoyment when compared to other total wards. Recently i re-installed MTW and its been a blast!!!! (nothing on RTW!!!). I've managed to lose my copy of Shogun and i don't know where i can get another one ( )
This topic has probably been covered a billion times in these forums but what the hey....

Anyone else have any opinions regarding RTW being the greatest TW ever???

I completely agree! I've put hundreds of hours into Medieval, Med2 and Shogun, almost 200 hours into Shogun2, almost 100 hours on Napoleon and less than 10 hours on Empire! Which are nothing compared to the incalculable number of hours that I've put into Rome and Rome Mods, currently have Darth8.1, XGM and Europa Barbarorum installed, and, of course Vanilla and BI, and all have ongoing campaigns! With Med2 I occaisionally play a Stainless Steel campaign which has been dragging on for months, and an Americas campaign that is also dragging on! Meanwhile, I've abandoned Shogun2 due to boredom - same thing over and over, and Napoleon isn't even installed anymore!

Rome rules! I am looking forward to Europa Barbarorum 2 for Med2 tho', which has the potential to out class Rome, I reckon.

    Hi there.
RTW, using the RTRPE is the best TW game, agreed.

Well in a recent poll most respondents felt that either M2TW or RTW were the best.

Rome is my personal favorite as it runs the smoothest on maximum settings. Medieval 2 would be at the top if it werent for my graphics card being made of bread and forcing me to lower the visual settings to the point where my soldiers look like potatoes (I keep mentioning food, must be hungry). Not that I care only about graphics its just that the 2 are so close to being my favorite that appearence is what tips the balance for me.

I usually go in phases though, like all last winter I played Medieval 2 constantly then spring came and I switched to Rome where I am still playing constantly. I only wish I knew what I was doing when installing mods I've been steadily playing vanilla Rome and Medieval 2 for over a year now because I cant tell my ass from my elbow when it comes to computers

My only response is that this colloquialism is unnecessary.

Posting this in the RTW subforum will obviously get you some biased replies but whatevs...

Anyway, I must respectfully disagree with you. M2 is much better in terms of AI and campaign mechanics, not to mention the terrible pathfinding in cities and the arcade-looking combat that's in RTW.

Actually the pathfinding in M2 is far worse than in RTW. At least i can place my troops in RTW, no, in M2 you can't place even half of them because of bugs.

@ Nosjack - It's something to do with the atmosphere that RTW has, that no other TW seems to have. Which was probably accidental, it being CA and all...

@ Cpt Krunch13 - There are many mods that have self-installers; Europa Barbarorum, Extended Greek, SPQR and Rome Total Realism to name a few, all you need to do is create a copy of your Rome folder (and contents!) under a different name and then direct the installer to that new copy of Rome. If you have only played vanilla, prepare to be blown away!

I meant moving your troops in a city, not placing them. While I can agree that the placement of your troops in M2 is somewhat frustrating, it's not near as frustrating as units breaking up into little pieces and men getting stuck when you order them to the city square.

Fair enough, I have that exact feeling except in regards to M2

Alrighty, I'll give those mods a shot, I always get jealous when I see pics of the mods and I dont know how to install them but I should be able to do what you said.

Anyway, another thing about Medieval 2 that bothers me is that I often get into battles where my units will start out on top of an un-climable mountain and my opponents at the bottom. Basically none of us can fight and I must sit until the time limit runs out...very annoying

It is mindblowing that CA didn't even care to fix that obvious problem before they released Rome, and even more so that it was still there with M2.
I'll be impressed if they have solved it in R2.

personally i think m2 the best...and then come rome.
i like much more the balance there.not many unbalanced units(spartans, berskerkers, cataphracts to mention as few).
another thing that i dont like its the speed of the units...in m2 if u,lets say charged light cav to pikes,u had opportunity to call them back,in rtw its nearly impossible if they are close enough.
and all of the factions had big disadvantages.in rtw there are factions that dont have...
    like seleucids,they have phalanxes,cataphracts,companions,legionaries.

In terms of pure blance in gameplay, m1 is the best there has been so far. But new GPU's can't run it, andit was nowhere near as moddable.

Medieval II is retarded. Stop complaining about speed, after an hour or two you'll be perfectly content with it.

RTW is too unbalanced. All the various factions have such great diversity between their units that combat is not very challenging. Nearly all other games have more equal unit types making things more balanced. Best of all would be the first STW as all clans share the exact same units - probably the reason why the battles there are very hard and the AI is a good opponent.

And the campaign is not much better - Three roman families that go never to war when being controlled by the AI, overpowered egyptian and british chariots in autoresolve and many good elements of other games removed. E.g. Civil Wars, Glourious Achievements/Prestige Victory, reappearing factions, the individual captains of the first MTW, fewer battles, the option of retreating to friendly provinces, assassination movies, the throne room, and much more.

The best TW game ever was MTW1 - it´s atmosphere and gameplay is unmatched.
Second is Napoleon:TW - the only good game since the first MTW, all in between are average.
Third in my list is the first STW as I have still much love for the risk style campaigns.

Well, I can't say if RTW is better than M1/S1/Empire/Napoleon/S2 because I never played those 5, I only played RTW and M2TW, I like them both, each has it's own PROS and CONS I still play them both (currently retrofit + GUAM for M2TW and XGM for RTW )
