Not sure about underrated, but I don't know if many people are into the Chinese film industry? I found the Red Cliff films excellent. Resurrection of the Dragon was pretty good, and The Warlords was great.

Looks very entertaining. I'll have to find it in English subtitles.

Same story with Deep Impact. When you have two movies with nearly identical settings people tend to pick the one with most Michael Bay in it...

Well it was Saving Private Ryan that came out just before Thin Red Line, so its understandable.

Wait a second here. Are you saying Deep Impact is good and/or Spielberg = Bay?

You're not reading it correctly - SI [Bay] is a unit of special effects. Actually it's measured as special effects per second, but informally it's used as a measure of the special effects used in a motion picture. It's interesting to note that Bays also indicate inversely the overall quality of the plot. Since Armaggedon had more special affects and its story was cheesier, it has more Bays.
And for the record, Deep Impact was good.

New World, also directed by Mallick. It has great costumes and realistic battles.

They've built the movie-fort on the same historical spot as the original.

The problem with the Thin Red line is the same that crippled the theatrical release of Kingdom of Heaven - a hacked and slashed theatrical version. I think if it had been done a two-part movie, the original cut, which ran for 5 hours and included an ensemble cast, would've been truly masterful. Malick envisioned it to be an Eden torn by the plague of war, with the human participants torn by the beauty and horror and the struggle for sanity. IMHO it would've been a masterpiece, the Showshank Redemption and Citizen Cain of American war movies... but that we shall never know.

The Russians have a lot of war movies made during the cold war that were spectacular, but after so many years the only thing I remember is the impression they left me with. There's one that I remember, it translates as something like "Checked, No Mines".
The Germans also made really good war movies - Stalingrad comes to mind.

Deep impact was the much better movie. Armageddon... the only real good thing to come out of it was "I don't wanna miss a thing" for its close dance appeal and makeout-and-panties-removing potential.

    Also, I love this scene:

I remember seeing this as a child, I was the same age as the kid in the movie, who's now a very dark knight...

    Also, Svoi (Our Own) :

    (turn to 3:31, for a shocker )

@ Grant, Brest Fortress looks awesome, thanks for recommending it

I wouldn't say Iron Cross is realistic, particularly from a German point of view, it has all the elements of a Sven Hassel fiction put on the wide screen ...

And Casablanca is anything BUT underrated... In the Marseilleise scene, the French actors were crying because France was occupied at the time. Those were REAL tears.

Never said it was realistic, just never get any WWII films about Germans over here. And I know Casablanca is anything but underrated, but I hardly know anyone who has actually watched it so I am starting to doubt all the chart topping.

I liked Cross of iron, definetely underrated. Casablanca is not a war movie. In term of acting it's my favourite movie, the prestence of Bogart is magnificent.

A man called horse seem to have been forgotten.

Le vieux fusil is highly rated in france, I don't know if it made it outside my country.

EDIT: I agree with King Musa, Kingdom of heaven uncut is a lot better, the cut version removed the little depth the movie had
