    Default AI Siege Defences

First new topic so here goes!

When i attack on sieges and i outnumber the defenders, i often attack on as many fronts as possible splitting my forces into attack groups to stretch the defenders out.

Sometimes the AI sensibly seems to realise it is being overwhelmed and quickly retreats to the center to regain the initiative. (Which is what i would do) However, sometimes it just seems to defend where it is and most of the units get wiped out pretty quickly.

My question is how does the AI make this assesment? When and how does it decide whether to defend the walls or not?

I play battle difficulty of Hard

I am playing an unmodded version though i do have kingdoms.

The AI retreats from walls if you have too many siege weapons. Make sense because otherwise, their units will get killed when the wall falls down.

Thank you for your reply and that makes total sense. However, this seems to happen even when i don't use balistic weapons. I often attack with just ladders rams and towers attacking 3 sides at once.

Someone must know how this works! Surely people who have modded the game would know this!

    Anyone at all?

I think the ability of the enemy general plays a major part. Face a decent general and the defenders will probably man the walls and atleast make an attempt at defending their settlement, if not fighting to the death. If you enter the settlement from multiple sides, the defenders will either split to defend the multiple positions or retreat to the centre and regroup, in my experience.

Taking Valencia from El Cid, the defenders made a good attempt at stopping me. Taking a captain-led backwater settlement, the defenders immediately retreated to the centre.

I'm sure there are many factors that the defenders take into consideration. Capability of each commander, strength ratios, size ratios, siege equipment, experience. As for the actual coding, I don't have any idea. Sorry.
