DVI GPU's

I am currently getting a new system and i have chosen the 2GB HD Radeon 6950, it has HDMI and DVI ports, the monitor i currently have has a VGA port that i use for my PC now and a HDMI port that I use for my PS3.
I read somewhere that DVI ports can still be used by using VGA lead to connect it to my VGA port on my monitor, is that correct or will i need to buy a HDMI to VGA or DVI to VGA depending on which port I decide to use on the GPU.

okay lets have a little break down'

almost every gpu you buy has a DVI to VGA adaptor in the box

DVI and HDMI are the exact same thing the difference there is DVI is larger and dosent carry audio while HDMI does, essentially they made DVI more versatile and named it HDMI

but yea in the box DVI to VGA adaptor will be included, and even if they werent there only $3-4 to get one.

And just stating the obvious here: If you're still using a vga monitor, it's time to upgrade.
