Have you updated your graphics drivers to the latest version?

Ok but have you actually updated the drivers yourself? Most of the time laptops and PC's are shipped with older drivers rather than the latest ones.

I guess you have Windows 7, right? And if so, you surely have DirectX11 already installed, right? Why don't you try to click on the Shogun shortcut on the desktop and play standard (with DX11, shouldn't ask you anything). If this simple thing doesn't work, try installing DirectX9.

Try it with the integrated graphics chip instead of the 540m?

Run the benchmark tests first before playing the game. In Steam library, right click Shogun2 and choose all the benchmark tests and let Shogun2 run them.
