Mass Rape in Congo... Again...

More than 300 women, men and children were raped by a coalition of rebel groups in the town of Luvungi and neighbouring villages in North Kivu province within miles of a UN base in August 2010.

The latest incident occurred in villages near the South Kivu town of Fizi between 10 and 12 June but was first reported earlier this week.

A spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency, Celine Schmitt, said that organisations working near where the attacks took place estimated that some 170 women were attacked in the villages of Nakiele and Abala on the night of 11-12 June.

Ehh... why? Raping the opposition's girls and wives will just lead to more armed opposition IMO, not fear.

So? They can always flee to Rwanda or Uganda if things go wrong, since those countries back them up.

Fear and humilation mainly. It's not necessarily logical, it's an ethnic conflict after all. They might just get their pleasure from defiling or impregnating the women of the other tribe.

well add the Iranians, libyans etc and it sounds like despots, revolutionaries, 'freedom fighters' and jailers are all attending the same conventions for new terror tactics.

I would consider this mass rape as a serious symptom of brigandry and lawlessness within the country.

Congo needs a strong government.

Well, they're ex-rebels/bandits/non-government troops, that surrendered, became part of the government forces (perhaps to get some guns), deserted, and demolished a bit of the countryside.

Sounds like another day in the place.
