    Default Corrupted system files.

    Hi,

    my power cut out yesterday and the improper shut-down corrupted some of my system files on Windows 7 64-bit.

    For example when I try to open wordpad i get;

    ---------------------------
    wordpad.exe - Bad Image
    ---------------------------
    C:\Windows\system32\ODBC32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

    I tried a system restore but received error 0x80070570.

    I also ran sfc /scannow in the CMD screen but that didn't work and I can't even access the logs.

    I found this site the problem though is that the software to scan and fix the file errors, doesn't appear to be compatible with 64-bit win 7.

    Does anyone know a good programme or solution that could help?

    Much appreciated.

    Can you uninstall Wordpad via the Add/Remove and then re-add it. Sorry - typing one hand long story.

    There seems to be a couple of programmes affected, such as system restore, which I'd use if able.

    Someone suggested installing service pack 1 to see if it helps, although I received another error when trying to do that which I'm trying to resolve;

    ERROR_HANDLE_EOF(0x80070026)

    It's all very strange how a simple improper shut-down corrupted so many system files. I'm trying to avoid reinstalling windows - that would be a nightmare.

    If you were in middle of an upgrade when power died then that could cause serious problems. Wiull look up that error code. BRB.

    Here's MS official page for your problem
    . Have you tried any of these?

    Perform a repair with your windows disk, it should just replace the corrupted windows files. This is probably far easier than wasting time working out how to fix one issue.

    Unfortunately not every system comes with a repair disc. He'll have to use what's at hand. Good luck!

    I don't have a repair disk, I still can't install SP1, I'm really stumped now, it feels like I tried everything.

    What Antivirus are you running? Any malware protection?

    EDIT: Do you own a Widows disc of any kind?

    Using Norton, I tried to download with it turned off, but no luck, I ran a DSKCHK on C drive - didn't work.

    I have the original windows 7 disk, so I guess Plan B is to backup my files and reinstall.

    Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you should be able to insert that Win7 disc and have it scan for OS integrity.

    But the fact that a checkdisc on c:\ didn't work is more than troubling.

    You may indeed be looking at a backup of all critical files and a clean format/re-install of Win7. Good luck in any case!

    EDIT: How sure are you about that harddrive?

    I received this message when trying to access a tech website;

    You connect to the Internet through an IP address. You are seeing this message because your computer is likely infected with a virus. The best thing to do is to run an anti-virus scan, which will scan your computer for viruses and malware. If a virus or malware is found, anti-virus will clean the intrusion. Once your IP address is seen virus-free for 14 days, this alert will disappear.

    I'm running a full Norton scan - could my problem be linked to a virus?

    Possibly but many of those sites are dodgy at best. Do this - enter Safe Mode and run malwarebytes. Let us know if you find anything. Good luck!

    Possibly still don't understand why when you have a windows 7 disk you are not simply running a repair first.

    Norton didn't find anything though I'll try malwarebytes.

    I didn't create a repair disk, I can only backup and reinstall windows. I'll have to get an external hard-drive and clean install.

    Do yourself a favor a run it in Safe Mode. And as for Doonos suggestion - I'm pretty sure you don't need to make a special restore/repair disc to recover anything newer than XP. This is a bit of a guess though because I usually don't need to recover all that much.

    Do your Malwarebytes search in Safe Mode then try Doono's suggestion and pop the Win 7 disc in and let it do it's thing. Good luck!

    Question - just why would you need an external HDD for a clean install? What are you doing with the HDD in your system? Feel free to not answer....

    Malwarebytes found nothing, it's due to the power cut I guess.

    I put in the windows 7 disk but only had the option to re-install unless I'm missing something.

    That part in bold, is there a way to reinstall windows without backing up my files on a external HDD?

    Also +rep Polecat, I do appreciate the help

    It depends on how much data you need to backup. One older school solution is to burn everything to a disc and then transfer over after OS reinstall. If you only have a little to backup then a thumb/flashdrive may do the trick.

    One hardcore solution - install a separate HDD in the system, format it, install Win7 and make it the Master. Then transfer everything you need to save over to the new drive. After that format the old HDD, reinstall Win7 on that drive and reverse the order.

    How much exactly do you need to back up? Look only at save games, music, video, and any special projects/schoolwork only. If you own the other software you can always reinstall that later. Save any copies of programs you don't have access to anymore for example.

    EDIT: Oops, sorry - missed your main point. Yes, you can backup everything to an external HDD aside from the OS. Use that backup route, wipe, format and reinstall Win7 on your normal HDD. Then transfer back. Good luck!

    A backup and reinstall, took a while but it replaced the corrupted files.
