Karzai: Pakistan firing missiles into Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan President Hamid Karzai accuses Pakistan of firing 470 rockets into two of its eastern border provinces in a three-week barrage.
Afghan security forces said Sunday that 36 people have died in the barrages, which hit civilians in areas where NATO forces have withdrawn. After the civilians fled, Pakistani Taliban came in and occupied the cleared areas, Afghan border officials said.
Afghan security officials say joint NATO and Afghan border units have fired back into Pakistan. NATO and Pakistan military officials, however, have denied any knowledge of border skirmishes.

This news is still pretty recent so there is still not too much info on it. It seems like a border skirmish, or it just may have been a mistake. Though its hard to believe Pakistan would accidently fire 470 missiles into Afghanistan. It says that NATO and Afghan forces fired back so it may be serious.

I don't know who to believe or for what purpose Pakistan would do this.

Because we all but pulled out of that province and the Pakistani Taliban has moved across the border due to increased pressure being put on them in Pakistan.

It isnt a bigger story because Pakistan is probably doing what they should be doing. It just happens to be in Afghan territory. And nobody really pays attention to Karzai anymore, anyhow.

The fact that NATO has no knowlede of this, when NATO units were supposedly involved, seems a bit iffy. Then again, NATO could always be keeping their mouths shut to avoid deteriorating Pakistani relations.

Really, if it did occur at all, I'd like to know the reasoning. The way the article worded it made it sound like the rockets were fired to allow the Taliban to advance, rather than in attempt to attack Taliban that had already advanced. Could the Taliban have acquired Pakistani artillery? How loyal to the fight is the Pakistani army? Perhaps it was a rogue element sympathetic to the taliban or in the pay of the local Taliban commander.

Wild speculation all, of course.

I think a source other than Hamid Karzai is needed but it is true that Pakistan is not happy with Hamid Karzai who they can't extert much leverage over.This is unlike the Taliban who owe their existence as a group to the ISI ever since they were bussed from Quetta to Qandahar in 1994.

Except that war+India+Pakistan= nuclear confrontation. Despite all our past machinations I don't see this as any logical move by us.

Pakistan has no long range capabilities, so what will happen is that the world would seek to occupy that country and depose the leadership and they would be successful.

Well obviously they pose no threat to anyone outside the region but I was assuming they would be used against India, since Valiant's proposal had India getting involved. And I can't invision any scenario where Pakistan an India would be on the same side.

nuclear war is accepted as inevitable these days. Its just a matter of time. Better a smaller nuke war halfway around the world from the US than a full scale one that engulfs the entire northern hemisphere.

People are ready for it mentally though not realistically prepared for one.

If we had just nuked *certian cities* 10 years ago we would have spared thousands of lives from a prolonged bloodbath. after all that du ammunition we might as well have dropped dirty bombs.
