Default How Does One Disable Shadows in 1.5?

I have a question, as you can tell by the title.

In earlier versions of RTW, I had no problems disabling the shadows and high quality shadows on the battlefield map. Since installing 1.5, I haven't been able to disable them, and the ones that appear to be sticking around are the high quality shadows, the ones that lace into my fps the most.

Before it is suggested, I have already disabled them in the in-game options menu, and have changed TRUE to FALSE in the preferences.txt file. Is there any way to disable these buggers that I haven't thought of?

i dont mean any offense when i say this and im sure ill sound like a jerk but by saying "How Does One Disable Shadows in 1.5" it makes it look like your trying to sound smart.

Anyway sorry about that but if you mean get rid of the blackish blobs that you get even after you've turned off shadows in video options i think you can get rid of them in preferences.txt if not then they are stuck there sorry.

Um. Sorry to use proper English grammar...?

Yeah, I already tried that. It didn't work.

Trying to sound smart? Maybe, but I would rather be able to clearly understand something that somebody has said rather than try to sort through all the acronyms and slang and crap a lot of people use in these forums. But thats just me.

Well, this problem is killing RTW for me. I literally cannot fight battles of any size in 1.5 due to the high quality shadows problem.

I recently installed SPQR 6, and it seems like an excellent mod, but as I was installing a fresh RTW 1.5, I noticed that in the Advanced Video Options I could uncheck the option for high quality shadows, but once unchecked, the box had a strange greyish color to it, and could not be re-checked. In fact, nothing can be done to it after you uncheck it, yet the shadows remain on.

I suppose if no one has any advice for this I either have to contact CA or ditch RTW til a fix is found...

It ruins RTW for me too. I'd rather have no shadows at all than those blobs, and high quality shadows kill my framerate.

I posted about this a while ago (this thingie was introduced by 1.3 I think), but no one has answered.

In perefences.txt in data\preferences, look for the lines:

    SHADOWS:FALSE
    DETAILED_UNIT_SHADOWS:FALSE
    STENCIL_SHADOWS:FALSE

Now these will be true for you, just change it to FALSE and the shadows will be disabled.

Going to try it out now.

Lol, I have to reinstall Rome first, I took it off my computer cause it was worthless with those shadows. Lusted, if this works, I will build a shrine to you in my living room!

Okay, it didn't work. Let me give you an example of what this looks like:

Those shadows will not go away no matter what I have done so far. All those preferences options are FALSE, but the shadows persist.

When I am in game, this is what my video options menu looks like:

As you can see, I am stumped. I have no idea what to do, save for contact CA (which I doubt they will help me with).

Okay, more research has revealed the following:

-The HQ shadows can be de-greyed. In order to have control over them, I need to turn on Shadows and Unit Shaders. Then the option becomes checkable/uncheckable again.

-The problem I am facing doesn't seem to be the HQ Shadows at all. In fact, with HQ Shadows checked on, the game runs smoother than with the 'blob' shadows I shall call them. The blob shadows only appear when ALL shadow options are turned off. (Unit Shaders doesn't affect it, they can be on or off, but if HQ shadows are off, and Shadows are off, then the 'blob' shadows appear). I am perplexed and confounded.

Proper grammar to the glory! I hate those with confusing nicks and even more confusing writing... :no

But back to topic. Is "High Quality Shadows" on the best looking AND fastest "set" of shadows in case shadows can't be removed? That's creepy.

When I was still able to install RTW on my computer, with BI there were three (3) preferences.txt files. So, make sure you do the changes to all of them.

So i tried a test betwen my comp and a laptop. My comp is a 1,4 ghz amd athlon, with 512 MB of ram and a ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 126mb. The laptop is a AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+ with 256 MB of ram and a ATI Radeon 9200.

On the laptop, RTW 1.0 is installed and on my comp, RTW 1.5 with SPQR 6.1. So on the laptop i set unit number on 160, same on my comp. I disabled shadows on both comps (except blobs on my comp), set unit detail on medium, with dust on. The game has no lag on the laptop, while on my pc it's 1 or 2 FPS per second. So i install 1.3, 1.5 patch and SPQR mod 6.1 on the laptop. I tried another 7000 battle, and it was unplayable because of blob shadows.

    This kills the game really.

I do not think you can get rid of those shadows has it is tied to the EXE. You can try in the middle of a battle, change the graphic options to see how the game looks. I noticed you have grass on, try turning that off also. GO AVALANCHE!!!
