    Default lolwut @ finance...

    For my Sparta campaign:

athens has always fluctuated first i thought it was because my former governor died and so i got a new one in there but nope didn't work for the longest time.....

Athens went from making 8k to -5k.... so i looked into the settlement details and i should be in the plus the taxes were way beyond the costs for the settlement and the numbers as well equated to being in the plus.

Then, finally Athens got back to making 10k after conquering something then two turns later (still making 10k) i conquered a settlement and destroyed 1enemy fleet at Athens flipped to -10k so WTF

A lot of it is based on troop distribution. If you recruit heavily from one place, other cities have to make up the slack and vice versa. So my first thought would be to either spread out your recruitment and have them retrain in your main military centers, or, if it's not affecting your income per turn much, not to worry about it. The economy is pretty hard to understand, I still don't really understand it and I've been playing RS since beta.

I'm pretty sure it also involves how many troops you have in one place. I noticed that cities tend to redline when there's high troop traffic even when there's no recruitment involved.

ok, but i don't get how in the same turn it was +10k then captured a settlement and went -10k. I would have thought by capturing a settlement it would have increased because the distribution for upkeep/wages would have 1 more city to spread out over. I always thought the most general thing as far as wages/upkeep was a) city size (larger city takes on greater percent) b) the number of cities to distribute the costs...

but if it's more complicated than that.. then =(

It depends where the settlement is located. If it is out of the local region for that faction, it will make your economy take a nose dive. They created an "area of locality" if you will to illustrate the difficulties of expansion and to inhibit blitzkrieg strategies. In essence, it's to represent the necessary funds being poured into the new province to bring it up to speed with the rest of the empire. And since it is (and was) a lengthy process to assimilate the locals and build infrastructure, that's the mods representation of doing so, unless I'm mistaken. If I'm incorrect in that assertion I'm sure it will be clarified by the higher-ups

There's also the whole taxation thing....if you build a lot of stuff in a settlement or raise a load of troops you are likely to be taxed on them, which can result in a loss of income
