hopefully over the summer when I get a job, I'll save enough to get a laptop (I wouldn't except that it's much easier for college). Anyhoo, any suggestions for one that is good for gaming?

Alienware tend to have the best gaming laptops, but all laptops have heating issues and sticking a big hot graphics card in such a small already hot space only makes it worse.
and its pretty hard to modify laptobs isn't it (say to put a better fan in)

That depends on how its put together but in general yeah it is, just like it's harder to build one (compared to a desktop), but alienware does make gaming laptops, and they are pretty reasonably priced (compared to their desktops anyway), and like their deskptops they usually have good cooling.
I really struggle to think of any other compnay that makes gaming laptops.
that helps a lot, thanks

Haha, good luck saving enough money to get one! In order to have a good laptop that can handle all the current and future games on decent settings, be prepared to spend at least $1800 (Which is the price for a lappy with a 6800 GO). Also be prepared to handle the heat, my Athlon 64 laptop melted the paint my table!!!

I'm not sure if the deal is still ongoing, but I just ordered an XPS (2Ghz, 1GB RAM, 60 GB 7200rpm hard drive, 7800GTX) for $1349 last Saturday. I have yet to receive it, but I'll upgrade the RAM when I receive it and hope it'll get me by for M2TW (I don't think I'll have a problem).Originally Posted by Last Roman
Well if you insist get the Dell XPS, don't go for the Alienware. The Dell laptop use Pentium M processors, which is proven to be better at gaming than the Pentium 4, or even the Athlon64 FX if overclocked. The Pentium 4 just runs wayyy to hot to be in a laptop.

hm i prefer a box to play and a laptop to work. i have a box that i can easyily upgrade (mobo/videocard/cpu/better fan etc) and a basic toshi laptop.
of course the laptop doesnt run current games but i just use it for internet and officestuff. if i want to play i have my box that i every now and then upgrade. well this is the minimalist tactics.

if you get a $5000 gaming laptop, you could get the equivalent desktop parts from newegg for like 1500-2500.
Gaming laptops are not worth the extra money and the loss of performance. Getting parts that cost $2000 will outperform the laptop, and then you can spend whatever remaining budget you have on a very portable laptop. In the end you'll be getting more for less by going this route, and if you need to upgrade your desktop, you'll have an easier and cheaper time of it than by upgrading a laptop.
Trust me: ordering $2500 in parts from newegg which will out perform an alienware laptop, and spending $1000-1500 on say, a good portable Sony Vaio will be much better than spending money on a $5000 Alienware laptop that you can't even carry around because it's so god damn heavy.
Bad advice. Ebay yourself a used laptop for about 100-200. Spend 800 on desktop parts. There, for the price of 1 midrange laptop, you got performance and portablility.
From my experience newegg is cheaper than ebay.Originally Posted by Lee1026
